My passenger van's floor mat was becoming torn from the multiple installation and removal of the seats plus carrying of various construction materials. A couple of years ago I installed some 3/4 inch EVA foam mats. Cheap and easy to cut and install. While they were nice on the feet and quieted the van significantly, they were too soft, resulting in tears, and the closed foam aspect of the EVA meant that when the van got hot, the foam expanded significantly resulting in annoying ripples in the foam.
I found some 3/8 inch vulcanized rubber mats similar to horse mats, for $20 total on Craiglist. So I used the EVA mats as the pattern for the cutting the new mats. I hated having to cut out plugs for the seats' legs. But for $20 I am not really losing much (I use the plugs when the seats are out and to gain a fully covered floor). Plus I had enough scrap to go all the way up to the firewall. The sound deadening quality seems to be even slightly better than the EVA (about 150 lbs for the rubber vs about 15 lbs for the EVA), plus I do enjoy the extra headroom (sounds silly for only 3/8 inch - but my height is just at the margin).
