Our Espar D4s stopped working on Sunday ski camping. Made for a cold morning. On Saturday the Espar was still running like a champ…
Symptoms: the D4s goes through the starting routine (blower starts, a short while later the Diesel pump starts to click) but only produces white smoke coming out of the (exterior) exhaust pipe. Then the heater shuts itself off. At no point during this procedure does the air blown into the cabin get warm. (no ignition ever taking place??)
BTW, I installed the Espar high altitude pump last year. It worked fine until Sunday. So I doubt the pump has anything to do with that. But I still have the regular/low elevation pump to swap and trouble shoot if needed.
So, before I get busy looking into this I thought I’d ask for advice on the possible culprit/things to check. (Apologies if this has been covered, but I have searched the forum, found some related info, but nothing specific to trouble-shooting the 'white smoke' non-start issue).
Also, before getting to work on this it would be useful to know if you can you get locked out. I have heard and read that the Espar will lock if it shuts down from overheating. But I am not sure if it also locks itself when I doesn’t start in the first place, as is the case with my D4s now.
And if I can’t sort this out myself, is Greg @ Lubrication Specialist still the place to send it in to? Or there somebody more local (Denver/Front Range area)?
Fortunately the winter camping season is over soon even in the mountains. But I would like to fix this over the summer!
Cheers from Laramie.
