Default Occasional strange turbo noise

Hello all,

First post, so please let me know if I am doing something wrong.

I have looked around through the forums, but have not found a similar posting (if someone sees one, please let me know and I will remove this immediately).

I have a 2011 2500 170, with 98K on it.

New to me, but seems to be in pretty good shape (thus far).

My issue and the reason I am turning to you all is that there is an occasional strange noise that seems to be coming from my turbo.

It has only happened a few times (4 to be exact in the last 4 months). The situation is always this. Driving along the highway, going 60-75 mpg, and possibly slightly involving a hill. The turbo is making its normal noise, then it seems to pick up and start a louder whine. Changing the speed does not stop it. I feel I lose some power, but if so not a ton. I think I have been going up a long slight hill most of the time.
It sounds like a new higher wind is going through it, and occasionally there is a change in pitch, but it usually stays pretty consistent.

After anywhere from 5-10 minutes it just slowly goes away, nothing really changes in my driving or the incline to make this change happen.
No warning lights, not rpm change, no nothing over then a louder pitch for a few minutes in the middle of the drive.

I am supposed to be driving across the country in a couple of days so I am hoping to figure it out asap.

Any help or hints are most appreciated.

Thanks

The turbo actuator will adjust the boost of the turbo. Perhaps it is unloading unneeded boost thus causing the turbo rpm to increase?

Could it actually be the Viscous Clutch and Fan? When the engine heats up, going up hill for example, it will kick in and make a roaring sound that does not change much with speed. That would likely be normal, although they do fail, either all the way off or all the way on. Look at your temperature gauge when this happens.

Regards,

Mark

Thank you both for your input.
Sorry for being slow to say this, it has been a rather busy few days.

Thanks again.
