Splitting Torque

Aussie,
Motoring journalists love to say things like torque splitting when they have no idea how it works. Your 4x4 does not have torque splitting, in 4x4 you get all the drive to each axle. In the later models the drive is applied to a planetary gear set that allows the front and rear axle to move at different speeds, The planetary gears drive the rear axle a little harder than the front, this is called torque splitting, but it is not important what the ratio is because the drive is determined by the traction available, not the gears. As mentioned, the T1N has no center diff, so the front and rear driveshafts always spin at the same speed.

The NCV3 has an open center diff. The diff has a rear torque bias, so the rear axle will have more torque than the front. With the traction control system braked rear (or front wheels) allow maximum torque to be applied to the front/rear if the other is spinning.
