Blurring the Blurtech

Well Gents you will have this info here & ONLY Here !
(except maybe if you are in the my back workshop by the de-grease tank!)

By a bit of shop experimentation if you want to kill your "no starter in ten", and continue your trip with less worries about getting stranded far from a dealer or lunatic like me
then--read on!

If or When your CEL comes on with a DEF light fault--like a tank heater fault--simply remove the FRONT NOx sensor and let it dangle in the wind but don't disconnect it!

If the missus says it's indecent letting it dangle down then clip it up with a zip tie and carry on & then pester a dealer workshop later at your leisure. As for the threaded hole in the bazooka tube! ,don't worry about it you will hardly hear the whoosh!

In short it confuses the system and it won't lock out nor even put the CEL back on if your clear it!

I tried in for the 6th time on 6 Blurrtecs yesterday and after more than 100 miles of stop staring & mixed highway running --NO LIGHT--No fault!

Being Mr pollution control conformist (unlike my Gloucestershire ancestors who were Non conformist ) you heard this from the elvers alright!.
Dennis

:thinking:Elvers?, elvers" :-
Look it up as a Gloucestershire delicacy ate with eggs and maybe bacon --some says its an old remedy for vigour & cost a lot less than viagra!:hmmm:

Can a MB firmware upgrade defeat this overide?
It certainly could, if it becomes well known enough and MB decides to care. The first part is certain, who knows about the second. But in the current climate of regulators freaking out over the merest hint of an emissions control impropriety it wouldn't shock me if MB decided that changing a few lines of code was less expensive than risking potential fallout when an Internet reporter uncovers the 'MB emissions cheat.'

For those of us less mechanically inclined does this image show the front NOx sensor we're talking about (2016 NVC3)?

Very interesting indeed.

I very much doubt MB would go to the trouble to pump out a recall for a solution such as this, which only a very few will ever find or take advantage of.

There is a remote chance future approvals for upcoming models might look for this loophole to be closed

However, some overzealous smog inspectors who happen to frequent this forum might become aware and look for dangly objects in this area... :)

Similarly, MB could but don't do a software update to prevent GDE tunes from working.

If they ever perfect and use an aftermarket NOX test as part of smog inspections, you might have to plug this back in to pass...

If I ever have the pleasure of using this information, my intention would be to plug it back in long before any smog inspection. I am quite sure thad Dennis' intentions in sharing this was as he stated--to help folks finish their trip and then get a proper repair.

Here's a thought.

Edit:
RIP that brainstorm.

RIP.jpg

The NOX sensors have to be initialized and then the CDI module has to be recoded on older models 2010-2013. If these procedures are skipped the data sent to the CDI module over the sensor CAN will not be accurate. Now with the SCR issue in a vehicle especially at higher miles this could be an indication that the NOX catalyst is no longer doing what it was designed to do. MB gave the catalyst a 100k miles service life and warranty. Please have the vehicle diagnosed by a competent technician with the right tools and knowledge. Like I said this system is not made for the DIY type of repair and diagnosis, the system is pretty complicated and hard to decipher. Good luck ... :bash::bash::bash::bash::bash::bash:

Well... maybe it will partially work. If a cheap enough sensor can be found, plugging that in and not properly initializing the sensor may still address/halt the 10 starts countdown. Too bad the sensor is so expensive.

It [The Thought] is based upon the premise that a new NOX sensor doesn't need scan tool introduction when installed. Also that a pressure differential monitor being satisfied by the open port isn't part of the reason the fix works.

Purchase the sensor to carry as a spare.

Scenario #1. If the 10 Start count rears its ugly head, plug the spare sensor in electrically. Leave the original sensor in place to keep the hole plugged.

Scenario #2. If that particular sensor fails, you have an on board spare.

I have no idea how expensive the sensor is.

Oops. Not cheap. 400 bucks.

Maybe a scrap yard takeoff will work. Just plug it in for a test before carrying it as a spare.

But... But... stuff like that worked in the 70's.

My 1974 Dodge B series voltage regulator was notorious for failure. After replacing a couple I finally just mounted a spare on the firewall next to the original. The harness/plug was long enough to reach both. From then on all I needed to do was swap a connector over. I would then buy another spare to mount at my convenience.

a great getcha home thing for sure, if it will work as advertised.. a couple things that come to my mind though.. having removed that particular sensor on my sprinter using all the usual tricks for a frozen in place unit, I wound up with a very thread destroyed, stripped out bung.. now if your trying to get home and do a repair down the road, I would be adverse to having the hot exhaust blowing out that hole, particularly with a regen happening.. that could be difficult if the threads are completely gone.. otherwise I would want a bolt to plug the hole.. my memory is faded a bit as it was a year ago.. if I wasn't so lazy I'd go back and look at my thread (pun) but the thread size is larger than expected.. either 20 or 22 mm

Yes it's just tip to allow you to enjoy the trip you are making ! Not get stranded and need an expensive tow, & then get it fixed at YOUR convenience and not sit for days in some dreary dealer shop/yard over a holiday period!
That's all

Well thank you Dennis!!! That was called in the old school Army a "field expedient repair". A fix so you can become mission capable or return home. Excellent!

I do believe you have that genetic mechanical ability inherited from your Glostershire ancestors. After all it was the home of the inventor of the lawn mower, airscrews (Dowty -Rotol), early aircraft (Handly Page), Gloster aircraft (first jet) and a bunch of other stuff. Your ability to speak truth to power betrays your "dissenting, non-conforming" heritage. You are good man!:thumbup:

Yes a field fix! Exactly!
And yes me too! I couldn't get used to the elvers--So I passed on those!

AND only recently my eldest son Rhys and his cousin Fred got the keys at 2,00 am after an evening in the local pub! My son achieved his long time goal to play the pipe organ as an American sounding out classical music across the open Gloucestershire countryside last year. Made the locals ask who the hell was practicing for an upcoming service at that hour?

I guess that could be a million dollar question.. Dennis seems to feel the open hole is a non issue.. if I was going to use this as a "get home" fix I'd certainly plug the hole with a short 20mm bolt.. I guess if it didn't work as Dennis suggests I'd take the bolt back out.. I can't imagine the hole would make any difference.. but then who would have thought pulling the sensor out and leaving it hanging would cure the the 10 start countdown either...

NO!
Leave it open! Let it whoosh, difficult to hear once it gets warm!
