Thanks W, just back from the local bodyshop, they have quoted me €5k which includes a replacement new box panel which runs from top of the rear light to the roof. This includes paint too.

Do you mind ! The UK made final payment of war loans to US and Canada in Dec 2006.
Yes
Indeed the UK paid its dues in full!
Just for the record !
A certain ex Colonial country (who shalt remain nameless or unmentioned) never paid its dues the French for their military assistance.

As a consequence the poor old French got their butts severely kicked for interfering in a family argument.
Its a lesson for us all on interfering in family affairs as an outsider!

I for one am grateful to the French for their interference, even if their motives were possibly more of a "the enemy of my enemy is my ally". I don't want to hi-jack the original poster's thread, but in the interest of finding the truth I offer contradictory evidence to your claim (assuming that the ex-colonial country is in fact the US of A):

From Answers.com "When did the US pay its Revolutionary War debt to France?

It was paid off ahead of schedule in 1795.

This was a hard one to track down. I finally found an article in The New York Times of March 21, 1921, that quotes Secretary of State Thomas Pickering, who served from 1795 to 1800, as writing:

n the year 1795, the whole of our debt to France was discharged, by anticipating the payment of eleven million and a half of livres, no part of which would have become due until the 2d of September, 1796, and then only one million and a half; the residue at subsequent periods; the last not until the year 1802.

In 1921 while negotiations were underway about World War I debts, a French journalist claimed the United States had never paid off this debt. The New York Times article was in response to his claim."

A little detective effort of any remnants of paint chips might yield some advantage for your claim against the responsible delivery truck company.

That along with having a good look at all of their trucks that might have been in your area at the time. It would behoove you to stop by unannounced so they don't have a chance to repair their truck or have it conveniently not be in the yard when you stop by. Bring along someone to act as a witness to anything said.

That is quite a bit of damage Micky. Once the hole is sealed up, you might consider painting a truck bedliner product on that panel. Matching the old paint can be tough sometimes, and as you have found, expen$ive. Plus the bedliner provides some flexibility and durability over any paint.

Thanks J, I have had my friend asking around, showing photos to body shops in the UK and he has found one that say they can do the repair for £1500GBP and will need thew van for a week, I planned on sleeping in the van during my stay there, so if I can raise the cash, I need to find extra for a B&B. I had planned on getting you sorted J, but things just haven't been going my way for a while now :(

I don't wish to hijack a thread but look at James Swan' banking activities 1795.

Whats this doing here?

Anyhow, there's been some helpful neighbours here, one said a certain delivery company was seen in the area of my van yesterday early morning, so I'm going to their depot today to make enquiries.
How did this turn out? The height of the damage seems to indicate a commercial vehicle, but the hit and run aspect is someone taking a big chance that no one saw anything and nothing was recorded on video in the vicinity.

We went to a commercial heavy duty vehicle delivery company yesterday but by the time we got there, they had finished for the day, so my wife is going to email them.

This particular company, someone who lives nearby said they saw one of their vehicles the morning it happened.

I have heard from my friend in the UK, a friend if his who also wirks in auto bodywork, said they will repair my van for £1500GBP which is s good deal, just need to raise the extra cash now.

It's been raining cats and dogs for 18 hours straight now and since sealing the damage with duct tape it's still leaking somehow but not only that, it's now also leaking from the rear factory blanking grommet, it never used to leak there before the hit. Gutted, had to put a bucket in there for now until the rain stops, also had to put down a beach towel to soak up the leak from the damage area.

Sadly my hand cut 12mm ply is sodden and will need to be replaced.

All the work I have done, roof rails, roof vents, and penitrations are all still watertight.

Who ever hit and run my van, have given me a world of pain.

I booked my ferry fir tomorrow evening from Helsinki to Tallin, Estonia, then it's a several country drive to the UK over a steady two or so days driving, where my van is booked into a body shop in the south of the country for the body repair on the 7th.

I'm still in the UK right now my van has been at the bodyshop since Monday morning, I've been told it maybe finished later on today.

In the meantime I've been having a walk around this beautiful part of the UK Penzance.

Photo below was out outward bound walk from St Michael's Mount, our feet got a little wet as the tide came in and started coming over the manmade pathway.

Will do, W.

Here's another photo from a short walk away from where I'm staying..
Yes the weather has been grim, but to be expected this time of year.

We started a 200km. walk along the Cornish coast near there in late May. Weather was better. Very pretty.

..and if you keep going west, this is where you end up.... NE coast of Nova Scotia.

Check out that MB "camper" next to us..!! (Owner was from Germany, had it shipped over to tour North America... must be nice...)

PS -- my first trip to Europe (UK, Holland, Germany, Scandinavia) was this time of year, precisely, in 1967. Got real familiar with the weather. First time I ever really understood what "west coast maritime climate" meant!
