Default Hi New guy here new member with sprintshift problems on a 316 EX ambo 03 Model

Hi Guys,

been reading the forum since aquiring my sprinter but havent joined becuase frankly i didnt have anything valuable to say but was more soaking up all the valuable knowledge that seems to be around

i currently have a 316 Ex ambo sprinter with the 2.7 and sprintshift gearbox which has recently run into problems and im hoping you can help ive done alot of searches and read alot of info but it seems my symptoms are slightly different.

the problem is the car wont select any gears at all moving the shifter does not change the dash indicator at all one in every 20 times you try change the shifter position (in manual or auto mode) the dash will flash n for awhile and then say F (i know this is bad).

so this is what i can tell you about the problem that i know is fact

1. Car is not displaying a mil light at all ( dont know if it should though)
2. This didnt happen over time like most i read it didnt get worse or ever go to limp just died
3. the pump sounds like it runs when you open the Door and also cycles when you move the shifter)
4. The car has been connected to Star at a mercedes dealer around 2 months ago when the problem first occured and was diagnosed with a low pressure fault so a pump was replaced i never was shown the printout and ultimately replacing the pump didn't fix anything as the problem still exists and fault hasn't changed

5. when i refused to pay for the pump the old one was put back in and the low pressure fault isn't there anymore (making me think it never existed in the first place)

i am really concearned about taking the car back to another mercedes dealer to just get guesswork problem solving i love the sprinter (and its even more special because i inherited it from a passen family member) but just don't have thousands of dollars to repair it

can anyone offer any suggestions or does anyone know a reliable sprintshift mechanic or have there own star that can look at my gearbox and tell me what's wrong.

thanks in advance for any help and i guess now i've made the time to sign up i will try become an active member as i look forward to a DIY camper conversion for my sprinter.

oh and i am an electrician and AV specialist if i can use my knowledge to help anyone

Wollongong,
Welcome to the growing number of ex ambo members.
I do not have any direct experience with your model but that never stops me. The fault you describe is typical of a faulty electrical plug. you pull it out and put it back and the problem changes. If you examine the Plug and socket going to the gear box you may find oil or water on the pins, if they are not shinny give them a dose of WD40 and try again. Eric.

Ok, sounds like you definitely need someone with the correct diagnosis equipment to find where to start looking, I would be reluctant to take it back to Mercedes because as you pointed out their fault finding skills leave a lot to be desired.

If you disconnect the battery for 20min and then reconnect does the fault show up immediately ?

Can the vehicle be driven at all or is the fault there 100% of the time.

Fault is there 100% of the time disconnecting the battery has no effect

And have tried the electrical plug thingy already thanks anyway Eric vehicle is undriveable we just towed it back from where it was to my home so it would go to a different dealer than before but I'm hesitant still as there mostly a car dealer not commercial so I'd say there's a chance I'd end up paying someone to learn or get the apprentice

I've just read this thread from a while ago and wondered if the brake light switch might be your fault?

Thanks Keith

Does the one switch operate lights and the ecu feed astge brake lights work fine but if its a separate switch or its a separate set of contacts it would see worth a try surely a brake light switch is a sub $200 item

Yes the brake switch is wired into the ECU's as well as the lights, I wouldn't recommend just changing parts on the hope of solving the problem ( that's what some dealers do) it needs to be diagnosed correctly and then go from there. Pity you don't live close to me, otherwise I'd be happy to help you sort it out.
