Undoubtedly with some time researching I could figure this out on my own, but I know there are people on this forum who have great advice...
I want to add a microwave oven to my build. Nothing fancy, a low wattage unit that can warm up left overs. Here is the situation.
* 2019 Sprinter.
* OEM spare battery under the hood is installed.
* No plans to add solar or shore power (at least not for several years). If the juice in the aux battery is used up, we just won't have electricity.
* The only other plans for the battery are some LED lights and USB charging ports.
* It will only rarely be used. It will get used as a camper far less than I would like. Mostly the van is a daily driver.
* It wouldn't bother me to have to be running the engine to use the microwave. It will only be used occasionally, and only for a few minutes at a time. Not sure if this matters.
I have two additional "what if" questions:
1. Would anything change if I wanted to run an induction burner rather than a microwave?
2. Would anything change if I wanted to be better prepared to add solar in the future? I've proven multiple times that my ability to predict the future is terrible, but it is conceivable that 5 or 6 years from now I'll want to add larger house batteries and solar. I wouldn't spend much now to prepare for this eventuality, but if the cost differential was low, I would want to understand the trade off.
