Towing A Westy

Please post your experience in having your Westy towed (emergency, shipping, etc.).

As our Westies become classics, may want to plan ahead for different situations, including emergency tows to long-distance shipping to experts for major repair (engine change), etc.

Don't want a tow operator to knock off part of the fiberglass top (apparently happened to some Westy owner).

A. Towing Services Plans

Various plans from Coachnet, Good Sam and AAA. Generally, Coachnet and Good Sam apparently have more experience with RVs. Need to compare mileage, etc. Also, if use Westy to tow a trailer, need to factor that in.

B. Towing/Shipping Companies

Uship.com is apparently a popular way to solicit bids for shipping an RV.

Need to check insurance.

LindenEngineering recommends TNT Hotshots for towing to their shop in Colorado (apparently they'll haul from California/Arizona to Dennis' shop).

C. Types of Towing

1. Tow Eye

Front of Sprinter on passenger side has a little U shaped hook. Can use for pulling Sprinter a couple of feet.

Caution: Someone posted that their Tow Eye pulled right out of Sprinter--apparently corrosion.

2. Aftermarket Tow Brackets for Flat Towing

Believe DS in Florida has this on his Westy. He uses a Class A motorhome to tow his Westy.

Presumably need modifications to driveshaft to tow.

Would this be a good idea for lifted offroading Westies as stronger front end structure to pull?

3. Front Wheels Lifted by Tow Truck Wheel Lift

This is probably a bad idea? Height may be too high as well as weight capability of tow truck.

Driveshaft presumably must be disconnected.

4. One End on Tow Dolly

Not sure how this works. One end is on a dolly and the the other end is on road or ???

5. Rollback

The tow truck has a platform which tilts and Westy is pulled onto the platform.

Height and weight may be issues.

6. Flatbed and Lowboy Flatbeds

Tow truck has a trailer and Westy is put on trailer. Height may be an issue.

Lowboy trailers have lower platform but not clear whether a Westy can fit on a lowboy (approach and departure angles).

7. Other???

If you go with a towing plan make sure that it states: towing to the nearest QUALIFIED repair facility. Otherwise they'll take you to any nearest repair facility and the Sprinter is likely to be a new animal to them.
