FRANKFURT - GERMAN luxury car maker Daimler said on Wednesday that job cuts might have to be considered if a sector slump persists, after putting almost half its workers on partial unemployment.
Daimler said it planned to cut German labour costs by two billion euros (S$4.6 billion) to 10 billion euros and that job cuts could not be ruled out if the steep decline in auto sales continued.

Dow Jones Newswires quoted Daimler personnel chief Guenther Fleig as explaining that vehicle sales had fallen by 40 per cent in February and that 'the problem is burning under our fingernails.' He spoke to reporters in Stuttgart in southern Germany following an extraordinary staff meeting.

He stressed however that 'all voluntary measures would have to be exploited first before we talk about job cuts,' and that such cuts have in any case been excluded before 2011 as part of an agreement with trade unions.

At present, 68,000 of Daimlers 141,000-strong workforce are affected by partial unemployment measures and the salaries of the others have been cut by 14 per cent, Mr Fleig said. -- AFP
