NO MORE YAHOO SPRINTER WESTFALIA GROUP

Unless somewhat hacked Yahoo, saw this on the Yahoo Sprinter Westfalia site.

Zach Woods had predicted this many years ago, had encouraged folks to switch, and had downloaded some content over here.

If anyone has a fast connection and knows how to download stuff, that'd be great.

Yahoo has made the decision to no longer allow users to upload content to the Yahoo Groups site. Beginning October 21, you won't be able to upload any more content to the site, and as of December 14 all previously posted content on the site will be permanently removed. You'll have until that date to save anything you've uploaded.

The parts database and the files would be good if they could transfer over. Do they have files and database option here?

This forum has a bit of a database capability, i can't recall if there's a simple "files" repository (have sikwan (owner/maintainer) buy a few more terabytes of storage?)

Another alternative is to migrate your Yahoo Group to "http://groups.io" ... groups can be set up for free, and they do have an automated mechanism for wholesale porting over of the Yahoo group to their site BUT using that requires buying one year of "premium" membership (during the transfer) for $110.
You can probably get by with the "free" option, and "simply" manually copy the files from Yahoo to groups.io
The free membership allows 1 gigabyte of storage. The paid-for allows 10 GB.

About a year ago, I helped another group that had a large archive abandon ship from Yahoo! before it was too late. We looked at many alternatives, and ended up at "Groups IO":

https://groups.io

They are specifically designed as a direct substitute for Yahoo! groups. It has worked out well. IIRC they have some tools to help with the data transfer.

Here's what i've been posting to groups that haven't noticed the world is about to change:
------------------
If you scroll to the top of this Yahoo Group's messages page (or others), you'll probably see this message:

"Attention: Starting December 14, 2019 Yahoo Groups will no longer host user created content on its sites. New content can no longer be uploaded after October 28, 2019. Learn More https://help.yahoo.com/kb/index?page=content&y=PROD_GRPS&locale=en_US&id=SLN31010&actp=email"

The link takes you to this page:

Which says (this is a cut-and-paste):

Q: What features will go away?
A: Files Polls Links Photos Folders Calendar Database Attachments Conversations Email Updates Message Digest Message History

Q: What will happen to the site?
A: The Yahoo Groups site will continue to exist, however, all public groups will be made private or restricted. Any new group members will need to request an invite or be invited by an admin. Admins will still be able to manage various group settings, though some functionality will be limited.

Q: What will happen on October 21st?
A: On October 21st, you will no longer be able to upload any content to the site. To share info with members of your groups, you'll continue to be able to do so via email.

Q: How can I keep my Yahoo Groups content?
A: Photos and files can be saved https://help.yahoo.com/kb/groups/photos-files-saved-sln2526.html right from the Yahoo Groups site, or you can download your data from the Privacy Dashboard https://help.yahoo.com/kb/groups/download-data-privacy-dashboard-sln28671.html.

Q: Will I be able to use Yahoo Groups going forward?
A: You'll still be able to communicate with your groups via email and search for private groups on the site. In addition, admins will continue to have limited access to group settings and administration tools.

------------end quote---------------

From the sounds of it (or "to put it mildly") this will have major impact on the way we play here in Sprintevan (and all other groups).

Since the message history is going away, i assume any submissions to the group will simply be emailed to email-receiving members. I receive my email copies via the "digest" method (one email has up to 25 postings) instead of receiving 25 separate emails.

A year or two ago, many Yahoo groups moved over to the groups.io host to escape from the Yahoo hiccups. An example is: https://ascomtalk.groups.io/ https://ascomtalk.groups.io/g/Help/messages

We may have to, unless people are willing to work/live in the far more restrictive Yahoo regime.
