Mod: No-Holes Roof

OldWest

2004 T1N Westfalia
TNeuer (4x4) has apparently restored his Westy fiberglass roof to eliminate
(i) air conditioner hole,
(ii) permanently open circular vent,
(iii) cooktop air exhaust vent (confirm?), and
(iv) graywater and blackwater tank vent at passenger rear roof.

Aesthetically, looks much better as cleaner look without all those rooftop protrusions.

The added rooftop width from removing the permanently open vent and cooktop vent allows two (2) 100 watt solar panels (confirm?) where the Kerstner air conditioner used to be.

TNeuer cleverly patched the interior hole from the permanently open circular vent by installing the smoke detector there.

The graywater and blackwater tanks (confirm?) are now vented through the floor where the existing air conditioner fan duct used to be.

Great work.

Smoke detector or CO detector on interior above kitchen cabinet.

A Fantastic Fan with a flat lid (or other flat lid vent) for the bathroom would make the fiberglass top even sleeker. As the waste tanks vent is now on the bottom of vehicle, can use Fantastic Fan to pull air in without worrying about sucking in waste gases.

The solar panels are King Solar 120w. Wires feed thru the bottom of the panels not the top. I cut holes in the roof and dropped them thru where the AC unit was.

The cook top vent now exhausts out the side. I made a fiberglass vent cap with a bug screen on it. The fan seems to work better now that the duct is about 2' shorter.

I moved the CO detector over the old circular hole to hide the patch.
Does anyone know of a combination CO/smoke detector for RV's? I've seem them for residential applications, but not RV or battery powered.

The tank vent is now vented thru the floor where the AC fan duct used to be.

I rebuilt the guides on the original bath skylight/vent. So until it suffers a traumatic amputation we'll keep it the way it is. Then it will be time for a Fantastic Fan.

Thanks,
Tom

1. Robert Foster--Additional Structure and Epoxy Fiberglass

Another thread.by Robert Foster.with posts on patching up holes in fiberglass top.

https://sprinter-source.com/forum/showpost.php?p=828958&postcount=3

Note: Foster also used 26 gauge steel as backing for body holes, somewhat flexible aluminum panels to cover window openings, and aluminum for backing of the steel body panel to fill-in water heater opening.

2..AutoCamp--1/8" 5052 Aluminum

AutoCamp replaced his Kerstner AC unit and used a large piece of aluminum to cover roof. He used the same original Kerstner bolts holes.to holddown the aluminum plate.

3. Hein--0.090 Aluminum and VHB

Hein of Impact Products sells various stuff for the Sprinters, including the 3M Thinsulate insulation. He also sells a plate to cover the original factory Sprinter rooftop air conditioner on passenger vans. He sells the plate with and without a hole for a 14"x14" fan. It probably is too small.for our AC hole (don't know), but the info may be useful.

From eBay:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/132954751093

Aluminum plate for covering OEM AC hole and ports and installing RV vent in center. For Sprinter 2007 to present with factory installed roof AC. Plates are .090 thick unfinished aluminum with VHB tape pre-applied for bonding to roof. Also includes 3 smaller plates for covering 3 ports. Prep surface of roof by cleaning and de glossing with isopropyl alcohol and scotch-brite pad. Apply VHB in warm conditions and use heat and pressure to set after installation. 3M 4412N sealant tape included for use as lap seal between plate and roof. Recommend that plate and sealant tape can be painted to match vehicle. RV vent is mounted with butyl tape provided. 14x14" opening. OEM AC hole will need to be enlarged to 14 by trimming approximately 1/4" along front edge. This can be done after plate is installed.

We also offer the AC Replacement Plate with no hole.
