Default Maybe new Isuzu diesel van will light a fire under Mercedes?

A little tease from the Isuzu announcement last month of a diesel van with a 310,000 mile engine with (claimed) better fuel economy than Sprinter. Just as tall and 10" wider. I know this is a Sprinter forum but will be interesting to see what impact the Isuzu might have on Sprinter. Shorter truck with much more volume.

Isuzu Commercial Truck of America, Inc./Announcement of New Commercial Van
Operators will find the new commercial van to be a functional mobile office. Even a driver over six feet in height can walk in and out of the cab in an upright position, and can stand up inside the cab area. The placement and design of instruments and controls have been simplified for ease of use and made modular for easy installation of customer- specific equipment.
The cargo area, easily accessible from the driver’s seat, is perhaps the new van’s most innovative feature. With an interior up to 27 inches higher than a conventional Ford or GM van and 10 inches wider than a Sprinter van, the cargo area can offer up to 700 cubic feet of storage. In addition, a choice of integrated vocational modules will give buyers the opportunity to turn the cargo area into a space virtually customized to their needs.

Isuzu have a solid reputation in OZ but its a truck-come-box therefore in a different class.
Looking at its basic claim of 85% SCR effectiveness it's already failed U.S emission standards for 2011-2012 final EPA/Bin Cafe rulings for N/A
It would be more of threat to GM and Ford,

Always great to have more competition, but I haven't seen any real pictures.

Searching Utilimaster and new walk-in van, I found a lot of step vans.

My best guess would be something like this on an NPR chassis.

I agree will need to see a picture to know for sure. Just reading the press release they claim it will be a new entry into commercial cargo van market. Since they mention Sprinter I am guessing they mean to compete with it also. They state will be truck like in construction, implying not a tinny box. Time will tell.

Geese, if its anything like that picture its way different than a 2500 sprinter van. It's got a one ton rear end or higher .....

That picture is just an old chevy step van.
310,000 miles on an engine. Not quite the distance sprinters get. My rig would be dead since that is my current mileage.
10" wider? Harder to park and get round small places.
Are there any advantages to this new rig?

You (and I) have a T1N ... the NCV3 is already at least 6 inches wider than ours, so the Isuzu is 16 inches wider than ours.

The Isuzu's 12000 GVW rating pushes it into the "bigger kid" class.
(i note that they don't list "RV Conversions" as one of the expected markets)

I do not think this vehicle is going to just a cab like Isuzu already has with a box tossed on it. The following excerpt from the press release by Utilimaster indicates efforts at "dramatic" and "aerodynamic" styling and "automotive" features. I believe it is an all new vehicle body using the the proven Isuzu frame and drivetrain. Read on:

"Added John Marshall, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Utilimaster, “We have worked extensively with key customers for more than 18 months to develop this product from the ground up and the response so far has been very encouraging. This next-generation van is expected to achieve best-in-class fuel economy along with important features to support commercial van customers, including a distinctly automotive aesthetic, that will set it apart in the marketplace.”

Exterior Design and Construction
The dramatic profile of the new van demonstrates the importance Isuzu and Utilimaster designers placed on aerodynamics. The streamlined shape improves fuel efficiency while it reduces interior noise."

One obvious advantage it would have over other vans in its class for motorhome purposes is that it would allow a long sleeping bed crosswise in the van without modifying the body and its structural integrity. This is not currently possible in any of the current products without modifying the body. That leaves more room for everything else in the motorhome, or allows using a shorter van for easier handling and parking.

http://www.ntea.com/worktruckshow/

March 8-10, 2011. Watch for this. At the Work Truck Show Isuzu and Utilimaster have space and have listed the showing a new commercial van. This is the one they announced last April. It is the one that will be on the proven Eco Max chassis and engine. 12,000 GVW duals. They stated it will have a very automobile appearance. Economical. High mileage. Walk through from cab to cargo. Six foot tall drivers opening.

http://www.tradingmarkets.com/news/p...an-931971.html

That date will tell all if Isuzu has a good competitor to the Sprinter, at least in the higher GVW. Certainly not passenger or small van, but the 3500. It will have 10, 12 or 14 foot long cargo.
