Double front passenger seat

OldWest

2004 T1N Westfalia
1. Our Westy has a different passenger seat base than other Sprinters with their square metal enclosure base. (Cupholders can be easily removed.)

Does the new two-seat passenger bench come with its own base? It looks like it has its own base.

2. How does the parking brake lever work (clearance space)?

3. How do airbags work with this configuration?

4. Just to be on safe side, might want to check with insurance company that there would be no issues with this retrofit. Might be better if available in USA as an option for a Dodge or Freightliner T1N Sprinter.

5. Here's another example of an extra seat but not as nice in looking like original equipment and no headrest.

https://www.sprinterworld.com/m.seats.html

Here's an add on jump seat with headrest but not clear re seatbelts:

https://shop4seats.com/sprinter-seats/jump-seats/2001-2006-sprinter-jump-seat.html

And RockAuto seems to suggest a jumpseat option:

British websites have folks trading their dual passenger seat for a single seat--usually for swivel campervan seats. But British dual passenger seats might not work.

6. Middle seat--issues re shoulder belt, age of occupant, etc.

Please post what you do. Thanks.

The link to eBay in the original post points to a "906" seat. 906 is the designation for the later Sprinter, known colloquially here as the NCV3.

Our Westys are built on the "W903" series. So no, that 906 seat would not fit, even if we did have the normal van seat base (which we don't.)

My understanding of the first-gen Sprinter (T1N) naming is that W901/902/903/904/905 is all the same van with different weight ratings, but with the 906 they kept them all together on one number.

OldWest, Thanks for the suggestions. I was hoping to find one with the shoulder belt. It is a given that we will lose the swivel feature on both the driver and passenger seats. There are quite a few listings on ebay.co.uk but those seats have the buckles on the right hand side, plus the pedestal might not fit on the right side of the NAFTA van.
Dr. A said he had gotten one in one of his shipments years ago and he sold it.
T1N with three front seats were very popular in Europe. Just don't know how to search for one.

This is the Mercedes catalog for 903 as Grozier points out, our T1N. When you click on the abive link, scroll down to the bottom. There look like two options: a dual seat (although called "driver's ancillary seat, twin seat" in heading) and a jump seat.

It's hard to tell from diagrams which item and part number is the complete package but you can use the diagrams and part numbers in your search. A Mercedes dealer may help (another poster got Walters Mercedes of Riverside, California, to track down the Eurooean front swaybar components for the Westy.)

Also, you can contact Mercedes dealers in USA or abroad who might be willing to order, if even available.

Note: There is a parts number conversion table posted here. When you get the right Mercedes part numbers, see if there is a corresponding Dodge number.

Please keep us posted.

Is this a real Dodge (Mercedes) or aftermarket jump seat?

The diagrams show a middle seat with Dodge parr numbers. Looks like a jump seat and not as nice as the twin seats.

Options for T1N model, like our Westy.

1. Dodge Jump Seat

Apparently original equipment for some Dodge Sprinters. BUT need to check if these were for cargo vans with permanent bulkheads (where does headrest attach?). Also, do these have shoulder belts? (Also check to see if any changes were made to airbags.)

2. Mercedes Twin Seats

Mercedes apparently had twin passenger seats in front (various names). Not available in USA. These have headrests and shoulder belts. Fixed position so not comfortable. Need to check if any modifications to airbag system (note that for the later model NCV3, the passenger airbag may??? have been bigger to protect the middle passenger and the middle passenger seatbelt also triggered safety features like thr airbag).

Could import from Europe.

3..Aftermarket USA Jump Seats

One forum poster noted that one manufacturer apparently does not provide instructions for installation, citing liability concerns.

4. Adding a T1N Single Seat to Middle

Australian poster suggested that the twin passenger seat base is the same as two single bases (regular, not Westy seat base).welded together.

5. Using a Regular Twin Passenger Seat from Behind Front Seats

Another suggestion was to see if a passenger bench seat from the passenger compartment might work.

6. Modifying a NCV3 Twin Seat

Same Australian poster said floors between T1N and NCV3 may be slightly different. One might modify or adjust.

7. Other Options?

-----------

For.safety, comments on this forum suggest the newer NCV3 apparently had a different wider airbag and seatbelt safety sensor for factory installed middle/twin seats.

Unknown as to whether the older T1N models had similar features.

Other issue includes the handbrake.

Just don't know how to search for one.
Try "sprinter 903 sitzbank beifahrer". Sitzbank = "sitting bench" and Beifahrer = "Co-driver"

The 901/902/903 seats should be identical.

Also, just for avoidance of doubt, the UK and Australian seats won't work because they are mirror image to our LHD vans!
