255/80r17 on Method 701s with 2" Lift Pics

Just thought I would attempt to post a picture. Super happy with this combination. Only down side is constantly getting asked about it. Happy to share the info of course. In PA for the weekend at a wrestling tournament, so we threw in a mattress, lovesac (giant foam filled bean bag) and the cooler. First night it was 17 degrees when I went to bed. D2 ran hard all night with no insulation, but the aux battery did the trick and the fuel usage was not detectable. Also using the TouRig window covers and liking them.

Cheers,

Matt

Nice looking Sprinter! Fuel used by your D2 will never register on the fuel gauge. Only fuel going through the engine gets registered on the fuel gauge in a Sprinter, unless you have Option Code J51. Weird? - I know but it's reality. Fortunately the D2 fuel tap can't fully drain the tank. The fuel tap is designed to leave 5 gallons in tanks, see attached detail of Option KL1.

Attached details on Option Code J51 explains how fuel gauge works.

Hope this helps,

That is good to know. I will have to find my window sheet and see if I have it. That sucks if I don't. I have the factory preheater, seems like it should have the J51 guage option too. I will check that out, good to know. What do people do to work around this issue?

Thanks,

Matt

Matt - I don't have a D2 aux heater. But I have run out of fuel due to a massive fuel leak caused by a inept dealer who did my first fuel filter change. That is when I discovered Option J51, as I ran out of with gauge reading half a tank. Had to have it towed back to dealer and they took two days to discover that I simply ran out of fuel.

I think J51 has been a "fleet only" item for many years now.

From comments I've read from others with diesel heaters it is not really a big issue, since the heater uses so little fuel. Just something you need to be aware of. If one was using a diesel generator then it might be a problem as they use a lot more fuel.

Others on this forum might have more thoughts to add.

Nice looking tires / wheels. I noticed you went with the 255/80/17 tires with method wheels. Do you think the cooper ST Maxx tires 255/85/16 tires would fit on the Method 301 or same 701 wheels?.....I would be putting on a 4x4 MB 144 Sprinter. Any chance they would fit in the stock tire carrier underneath without too much wrestling around?. Thanks

I honestly couldn't say on the Coopers. Mine wouldn't fit in the carrier. I have got to make a little modification and it should. There is a great tire size reference on the Van Compass page, I would check that out to confirm.

Super happy with mine.

Cooper STMaxx 255s fit in the spare carrier. Needs a little elbow grease but the carrier 'bars' lines up perfectly with the grooves in the255/80/17 or 255/85/16 Maxx's. After a 5 tire rotation or 2 they fit even easier. Have run the above on stock steel 16" rims and Black Rhino York 17" rims

Can the J51 option be added after the fact?
I can confirm that the J51 option can be added after the fact. I just had it programmed on my van by the dealer yesterday.

I don't have a fleet vehicle.

They charged me for one hour of labor.

Can you tell me what they call J51, or is that all you reference? Thanks!
This is exactly what I wrote on the dealer's intake form:
Please program Merc Benz service code J-51, "Fuel Gauge, Optomized for Aux. Fuel Tap"

The service advisor didn't know what I was talking about, but said that he was confident his sprinter specialists could do it. They could, and did. He called later in the day and let me know the van was ready for pickup.

The invoice lists the item charge as "Service Code J-51".

Did you lose the ability to see the leftover fuel range calculation with the J51? I was told that was the tradeoff.

That is a great tradeoff, hoping I can get this done reasonably here in Northern Virginia.
