Default Gunky Black Oily Residue Passenger Side of HP Fuel Pump

I'm in the process of some major (to me) preventative maintenance (water pump, thermostat, HP fuel pump fastener reseat, etc).

I noticed a lot of black residue on the passenger side of the HP fuel pump. It looks, from the way its built up on things like the transmission dipstick line, that it is being spewed from the direction of the fuel pump. See pictures.

Does this look like classic HP fuel pump leaking? It is very black and grimey.

I was already planning to remove the fuel pump and loc-tite the fasteners on the backside, but wanted to know if there is something else I should be looking to find the root cause of this symptom.

Thanks,

Nate

Hmm...Any theories where oil in that location would likely be seeping from?

Valve cover gasket, The seal between the HP pump and the block. The vacuum pump to block seal. Give the goo a sniff. If its diesel based it will smell like it.

Some maybe helpful additional findings:

1. Residue did not smell like diesel (as far as I could tell).

2. When we removed the high pressure pump, the backside of it was pretty covered with black residue also. The o-ring looked intact. See picture.

3. The 6-bolts on the back of the high pressure pump were all tight. We removed and applied removable loc-tite to avoid any future concerns.

Related: I noticed a portion of a gasket or seal of sorts sticking out between two sections of the engine block just below the fuel pump. See picture. What seal/gasket is this? Should it be sticking out like that?

In any case, we got everything cleaned up pretty well, so hopefully we'll be able to spot a source if we haven't fixed it with the parts replacements/service we're doing.

That is the head gasket. Parts of it sticking out are normal. If the head gasket was messed up, you would know it!
