Default Engine Coolant Operating Temperatures

Hello, I have a 2016 Sprinter 170 4x4, fully built out and near GVWR. Stock tires and bumpers but roof rack and side ladder. Nothing in front of the radiator grille and no engine changes. I have an UltraGauge and I keep on the screen the engine coolant temperature, and I've noticed that at times my coolant reaches temperatures higher than I would expect for a modern vehicle. I'll report my experiences and curious to hear about others and their coolant operating temps.

My van typically operates between 185-195F, particularly on level road at highway speeds, and can be slightly higher when climbing gradual hills at highway speeds or around town. Temperature does climb to 210-225F during hot weather (85-95F ambient) and on steeper hill climbs. I live in Reno-Tahoe area, so ambient temps usually range from 20-90F and almost constant 20% humidity, so moderate temps. Running the AC doesn't seem to add much to operating temps but interestingly going slowly (20-40 mph), temperature rises, and it can even while idling in park unit it reaches a 212-220F range. I've seen temps of 220-225 when on city streets at ~30mph. no AC on and outside temps of 80-90F, which seems very hot to me and the van seems to take quite some time to cool back down or requires a coasting descent to cool back to less than 210F and a couple of minutes to get below 200F.

I have taken the van to the dealer three times now on my concern that these operating temps are high, and they have checked the fan operation, replaced the coolant and radiator, but still no change in operating temp. The dealer's tech checked into the normal operating temp spec and reports that it is 80c-110c (176-230F), so my van operates within this range, but it still seems hot and certainly higher than other modern vehicles I have owned, and when operating at higher temps looses some water that steams out of the reservoir, so I still question these higher operating temps.

I am curious to hear what you see as actual engine coolant operating temperatures in your vans. Thanks,

Those temps don't seem out of line to me. I'm not sure how the 2016 iteration of the thermostatic fan is set up but in general modern vehicles are frequently tuned to minimize fan operation in order to save fuel, thus 'in traffic' temps can be higher than in the past and are no problem. I see around 195-200 on the open road, climbing to maybe 220 or so on grades, and while I don't spend a lot of time in traffic but I wouldn't be surprised it coolant temps were routinely above 200 in that circumstance on warmish days, so... about the same as you.

Mine runs about 175 or slightly above.

If you really see 175-ish when fully warmed up I think you'd better check your thermostat.

Yeah, from day one I thought it was always low. Seems to run great.

This is from Ultra Gauge Blue. Any thoughts, still to low? Maybe it's higher, my vision isn't all that great, I don't wear bifocals.

I'll check out what scan gauge two says.

IDK, it seems to run in this range and has for years. I know that doesn't make it right. If there was a temp issue, wouldn't throw a code? I'm going to make an appointment for bifocals. I am not a mathlete, and not certain if my values are correct.

Here's where mine runs since purchase (3/2015). Is it too low, if so, wouldn't it throw a code?
