Default EGR Top Emits high pitched tone

On the 2004 Sprinter engine there is the EGR valve that sits up and forward in the engine compartment.

The top of it is about 1 inch by 2 inch and has a rubber coating on the top.

It emits a high pitched tone with he engine running.. unless you put your finger on it whilst running…then it will stop

My wife says she refuses to sit out in the hood anymore with her finger on the EGR valve.

I was going to unplug the EGR harness wire from there to see if the noise would stop…..but I did not want to throw a code.

Any ideas what the noise is and because the EGR does not work like it was stock.

Maybe it is just the Sprinters with a GDE tune or?

My most educated guess would be that the EGR stepper motor is trying to work , but the internals are dirty & jamming the valve itself . This is making the motor emit the noise you can here . Removing the EGR & cleaning it may resolve this , but do not hold your breath . I have heard advance solenoids on injection pumps make " whining " sounds when they jam due to contamination

Must say your wife is a sport for placing her thumb on the EGR whilst you drive , mine fell off in the rain after the wiper motor broke , I do miss her

The stepper motor could be turned off ( if possible).......the EGR is not supposed to work but maybe the stepper motor is? The GDE tune eliminates the EGR valve function.

Having said that you probably correct. I would like to get rid of the noise and my wife wants a new job!

It could be a leaking gasket on the EGR making the noise, try tightening the bolts.
Or unplug the EGR, an see if the noise is gone, that may throw a code but that doesn't mean the van won't run.

I have the same problem, however the whine persists after I turn off the engine. If I unplug the EGR sensor (or solenoid?) it stops the sound. It sounds like some sort of alarm.

I will clean the whole unit and report back...

If you have nothing to add to be informative......you should probably go to the outdoor theater so we don't have to watch you be a fool

TJ, Apologies if you are offended.

I am very interested in this thread as it pertains to a GDE tune; I was attempting to indicate my interest and bump the thread to keep it high on the list.

Are there any other developments?
