Big and Little Schloss

'02 140 Hi BlueBlk Pass
I did a 18.2 mile loop hike of Big and Little Schloss in the George Washington National Forest on the Virginia and West Virginia border.

Parking at the FR92 trailhead

It is 1100 foot climb to Little Schloss and a rock scramble to the top in 90-degree weather:

A good 300-degree view from the top - Woodstock, VA to the right, Mill Mountain to the left:

Shortly thereafter there is a field that may have been a homestead long ago - domestic grapes gone wild and ornamental pines. Now largely a campsite for ATV mounted deer hunters:

The CCC made these trails in the '30's. Here is the Sugar Knob cookhouse, now a PATC cabin.

Mostly ridge trails between the climbs and falls. So lots of rock formations.

My campsite.

Big Schloss from the north:

They must have brought in the pieces by helicopter
