ID These injecton pumps

Ok, one is off my parts van, the other is off my 2004. I just pulled each bolt and put thread lock on the one from the parts van, but I want to verify that it is the same. The Mercedes part number is 1 digit different between them. I was also curious how to read the date codes. Mine seems to have a 5 within the star and the number 1037, whereas the parts pan one looks to have possibly an 11 in the Star Circle, with the number 1449.

I just want to verify this before installation.

Assuming both engines are the same type (612/647), the pumps will interchange without issue. The part numbers will typically change throughout the production run. especially for complex parts like the HP pump.

The date codes are simple: 2003-june-19 and 2005-may-21

There was the (in the US) shift from OM612 to the OM647 engine in that time period, but a June 2003 part could certainly have gone into an August-or-later OM647.

What i do for these "one digit different" questions is back-track the numbers through the MB/Chrysler part number cross-refs. If the Chrysler number differs by only the trailing letter (xxxxxAA to xxxxxAB), you're just seeing a minor tweak/improvement ... they'd be interchangable.
UNfortunately, in this case 648 070 01 01 is Chrysler 05137289AA
and 05137289AB is MB number A 648 070 00 01 80 (they added another two digits)
Your 02 01 number is Chrysler 05142257AA

So now we dig into the different years' parts catalogs... (more soon)
First hit: the 02 01 (05142257AA) is for the OM647, and shows up in the 2006 parts catalog.
Second (non) hit: My 2003 (OM612) catalog has 05136012AA as the injection pump,
which is MB A 612 070 01 01 80 (note it's 612, not 648)
(i'll go look in a 2004 catalog)
In the 2004, it's 05137289AA ... so we're back to your 648 070 01 01

So one of your pumps (01 01) was listed for the 2004 model, and the (02 01) for the 2006.

The 2005 catalog shows 5142256AB (arrrggghh) , which doesn't show up in the cross-ref guide.

That's both good to know, and hilarious.

01 01 came out of the 2006 parts van. 02 01 came out of the running 2004.

*but* my 2004 doesn't have the original engine. It was swapped out at some point in time.

If it hasn't been indicated yet, the numbers that you are worried about are likely related to the casting of the parts at the foundry. They can, and probably do have little to do with a MB specific application. The same fuel pump cast aluminum body may be used in many types and even brands of vehicles that use Bosch fuel injection.
