Cost to repaint?

Anybody have their Westy repainted?

After peeling off the upper decals (which left a shadow), and noticing some specks on the hood from the notoriously thin Sprinter paint, I'm wanting to freshen up the exterior. But the first body shop I went to wouldn't even give me a quote, saying I wouldn't like the number.

I'm going to look into whether there are any RV/truck painting outfits around here in CT, but not knowing anything about auto painting, I'm not sure what a reasonable estimate is.

Thoughts?

Prices are apparently all over, depending upon preparation, body work, etc.

The low end for a quick respray seems to be in the $2000-2500 range for a regular Sprinter.

Dennis at LindenEngineering suggests a starting price of $5500 to $8500 for a car like finish.

1. Stay with same color

If you change colors, there's more work as the original paint color is covered up by windshield/window rubberstripping, jamb moldings, interior door panels, rubbery black seam fillers between body panels (where driver side sliding door would be, taillight panel, etc.), bumpers, etc.

2. Partial paint job

If most of body is in good condition, you might just paint the fiberglass top.and hood. Those panels.have nice paint breaks or separations, and no obvious moldings to take off.

Another poster here did the sides of their fiberglass top rather than the whole thing.

3. Paints

4. Windshield

If there is any rust under windshield moldings, might be worthwhile to have windshield removed, rust fixed (metal, primed, painted), and windshield reinstalled.

As it's a hassle to paint and little dings are annoying, I'd.go with a black or other color bedliner like Monstaliner on the bottom of the Westy. Would probably use the top of the headlight as the demarcation line separating the bedliner from the Sprinter paint.

On the hood (after a new paint job), I'd probably add the clear film protection.

On any new paint, would probaby coat with that new ceramic coating--especially on hard to wash areas like the fiberglass top.

Dang, West, do you ever rest? Thanks for running all that to ground...

I am thinking of just having the hood and top sides done for now. And I'm definitely sticking with the original silver. And I'm definitely having the lower band done in something like Monstaliner or Durabak...

Wow, what a great story! I would definitely consider that if I lived anywhere close. A bit of a drive from CT, though...
