Default 2018 Unity is toast, literally!

I am sharing our misfortune with the Sprinter-Source community.

Our storage facility caught fire. We expect our Unity will be a total loss and have not been in the building at this point. I am worried the heat was sufficient to cause the body to delaminate and/or separation between the fiberglass and underlying poly styrene insulation.

You can see in the pictures that the license plate frame melted and the front grille melted or was hit by falling debris.

The fire was started by someone working on motorcycle on the first floor. The sprinkler system failed to operate. Fortunately, no one was hurt (or worse) in the fire.

There was a waiting list to get a spot, and we felt lucky when on opened up.

Thanks,
SandK

Yikes. Hope your insurance will let you start over on this one. Smoke damage on the inside of the coach would be next to impossible to mitigate.

That storage facility better have some really good insurance! That’s a real tragedy! Not only for you but all those collector cars; this will be in the millions most likely. Thankfully no one was hurt but highly unusual for a storage facility to even allow work to be performed on site other than in an outdoor area away from other vehicles just for this reason. Best of luck in the rest of this story.

Actually I'm rather surprised at how good the RV looks compared to the pictures of some of the other vehicles stored there. I mean the way the license plate frame melted I would expect to see a lot more damage to the rear of the Unity. I still think it will be a total loss due to the smoke and water damage and would love to see some shots of how the inside of the Unity fared. But after seeing the total destruction most fires do to most RV's, I was somewhat impressed.

Sorry for your loss, hope the insurance pays for a new one. Good Luck

How tragic. Most storage facilities claim no responsibility for the contents of their storage facility. They only sometimes insure the facility. If their sprinkler system failed to operate, you may have a negligence case against them if they don't file bankruptcy first. Like apartment fires, unless the tenant has an insurance policy covering their property, tenents take the loss. And unless you have a full replacement coverage on your RV, your only going to get an adjusted worth settlement. Much less $ than a new replacement. I hope this goes well SandK. I keep mine in storage also. This would make me sick! I need to decide risk vs. an extra insurance premium. Keep us posted on the outcome.
