Hello All -

The attached file was passed along to me by OldFool who had evidence that it may be for the Airstream Sprinter Westfalia Battery Charger.

I will follow this post up with information he had concerning this documentation.

The above thread concerns a Westfalia Battery Charger that BusDepot.com bought a bunch of from Westfalia. Pretty sure these are our battery chargers. One of the posters posted a PDF file on the battery charger which I don't think we have. Also info was provided on the manufacturer of the charger. Thought it might be useful info to have. Downside is I wonder if Westfalia will have any in stock.

Apparently BusDepot.com bought out the inventory of battery chargers from Westfalia which means we may not have any replacements from Airstream or Westfalia and BusDepot.com apparently doesn't have any left."

According the the Samba thread, the battery charger was manufactured by Cherokee Europe for Westfalia. Cherokee Europe was purchased by its management in 2008 and became Mitra Energy and Infrastructure with a website mitra-ei.com. That name later became Mitra Innovations. Mitra Innovations is now part of Alpha Technologies.

Besides the battery charging wires/cables for the starting battery and house-coach batteries, there is the remote temperature sensor wire and a set of sensor wires attached to the house-coach batteries. These sensor wires presumably read the voltage at the house-coach batteries and provide that information back to the charger which presumably adjusts the charging voltage up and down. The voltage set by the charger may differ from that at the battery terminals because of voltage drop and other factors. Thus some chargers have a set of wires to read the voltage at the battery terminals.

This is speculation that the Westfalia charger is set up in this fashion. If incorrect, please posr correct information. Thanks.

Hello All

Is the standard WESTY Battery charger adjustable based on the type of batteries - GEL vs. AGM?

If not, anyone know what charger product fits in the same area and support AGM batteries?

It does not appear to be. To make it adjustable would likely require modification of the charger circuitry.

How big are other chargers? You could probably fit something the size of a medium sized english dictionary in the same space. If you were willing to relocate the charger you would have many locations with more room not that far away.

Folks,

This is an interesting and timely topic. The instructions confirm what I noticed by looking at the box itself: The NAFTA charger is 120V 50/60Hz, and not dual voltage like a lot of electronics (e.g., laptops) these days.

Given that the proper 240V charger is 400+ Euros, what do you think of using something like this converter to charge the house batteries while plugged into EU current? I wouldn't use the A/C.

Interesting in that, in big bold letters on page 3, it states that the charger is for lead-acid batteries only. And yet, the Westy came with gel cells, with the owners manual warning against replacing with lead-acid batteries.

Who to believe?

As youre in Europe you have many different options not available in US.

1. What batteries do you currently have and may have in future? That will affect choice of charger in terms of charging profile, and size (how much power amperage. Some batteries like higher charging voltages and amperage

2. Do you wish this as a standalone, in parallel with a switch or as a replacement? If replacement will be a small low amp charger like a CTek or Votronic which should fit in same space (check airspace requirements and wire sizes)

If go with larger charger check Sterling ProCharge Ultra in England. Sold in US as well under that name and ProMariner ProNautic. Has good reviews.

Other well reviewed chargers in Europe include Merlin and Dolphin. Xantrex Truecharge 2.

Would want one which you dont have to switch source of a/c as you may be using generator (need to exercise 2 hours a month) or disconnect generator from Westfalia using circuit breaker--but exercise is only 1/2 load preferred. Also coach house a/c shoukd be used perodically.

Would have to relocate charger. Original space might be used for a small inverter

3. In looking at charger

charging voltage for bulk, absorption and floag match battery requirements

Size of charger fits whatever space (and wire sizes)

Wattage usage of charger is met by generator, shorepower circuit breakers, and other simultaneous loads (chargers above 1000 watts might be too big)

Temperature sensor adjusted

Efficiency(power factor corrected and compatible with generator; switched mode technology for efficiency)

Low ripple (doesnt damage 12 volt equipment)

Various protections like reverse polarity, overload, high temps, high voltage,

Remote monitor

How noisy if cooling fan

Radio frequency interference

On/off switch

If you go with voltage converter as described on your Amazon link then would you plug in 30 amp cord with 30-15 amp adapter into the converter? That would make more sense than changing charger (and 110 ac circuit breaker/outlets)

Bumped into a German couple that had a similar one which did reverse for their German RV.l
