What is the average cost of a fuel filter, for a 2006 2500 sprinter, Mercedes engine?
The local dealer wants $150 to replace my fuel filter. It's on a 2500 - 2006 Mercedes engine. Is that high?

How about $36.50??? http://store.europarts-sd.com/fuelfilter-diesel2004-2009.aspx Plus, if you look around you can probably get one cheaper, just make sure it accepts the water sensor and has replacement O rings and such. Personally, I think the fuel filter is such an important item on a diesel that I prefer to go with a brand approved by the OEM.

Here is a write up on changing the filter http://www.sprinter-source.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2318 that you should read. Advice, DO NOT use worm gear type clamps on the fuel lines. You want 15 mm and 13 mm smooth clamps such as are used in fuel injection systems. They are available at just about any auto parts store.

I replaced mine and found it to be fairly straightforward and easy to do.

BTW - is that Canton, MI or China? :smilewink:

If it is $150 to replace it, and that icludes the part and labor, then I would be tempted.

After the first time you should be able to do it in less than 1/2 hour. I always carry a spare in a coffee can with the tools needed. I could put the old filter in the coffee can sealded up. Never needed it yet I change my filter every 40,000.

Hengst aftermarket filter is about $25-30, but not so great. Get the stock filter for $35 and learn how to install it. It takes less than 10 minutes once you get used to the procedure. No special tools required. Take the $100 you save and buy guns and gold.

Why not use the worm gear clamps? Do they loosen over time? Do they overtighten on the hose and cause pieces of the hose to come off? If so, is that hose degradation a problem?

I didn't have any problems with mine, but the ones that I could find easily were Made in China. If you can find some good quality ones I would go that route. Like on this page...

The stainless steel ones from the above link cost a lot more than the locally found worm type, but at least they're reuseable on a $40k vehicle. :smirk: I believe you can find the same type from your local NAPA store.

Just out of curiosity, I asked my local dealer in Barrington, Il. They quoted me $220 labor plus $50-60 in materials. I'll do it myself.
