Symptoms: When turning the key to pre-start position ESP, Traction, and ASR are illuminated. Next key position to start and will not start or occasionally starts after many tries. Also duration between last shutdown seemed to matter in leaving it alone for a few hours or overnight occasionally allowed start with no ESP, Traction, ASR illumination. Diagnostic scan reveals no codes. Condition steadily worsens and at it's worse resulted in engine shutdown while idling or driving.

Got lucky one day and saw "18265/P1857 Load Signal Error Message from Engine Contr." but never saw it again even after clearing codes and many failed starts.

After one major shutdown during driving I immediately OBDII scanned and finally got a group of codes:

4759 - CAN message ID210h Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623): failed
4D2E - Steering Angle Sensor (G85): Incorrect Signal Conditions
4804 - Transmitted variant value: outside permissible range

I presume the steering sensor message was due to shutdown while driving and not really related.

Root Cause: Starter relay intermittent failure.

SOLUTION: Starter relay replacement.

Location: Under driver seat.
Part number: 0025422619 (sourced NAPA $11) (they list as cooling fan relay)

If you want to play around, remove the relay and watch your dash...lights on. Install relay and lights off.
