Can I swap fuel sending unit?

1st time poster!! My son bought a bare bones used FedEx fleet van. Bit of a rust bucket from NJ. He wants to build it out and live in it. One of the tasks is installing an Espar D2 heater. Instead of drilling into the tank to install a standpipe, can i just swap out a later model or aux heater equipped fuel sending unit from another vehicle? Are all T1N units plug and play with other T1Ns?

What year is his van?
The 2001-2003 pickups are VERY different from the 2004-2006 pickups
(the newer ones have an electric pump embedded, the earlier ones don't)

The pickups also differed as to whether or not they had the extra outlet for the heater fuel feed.

If its a 2004-2006, yes. That's what I did. I haven't used the port as of yet, but will likely install some type of diesel-fired heater before this winter (moving north), so it is capped off with a rubber vacuum cap and held in place by a hose clamp until needed.
