Intercooler hose

Mine split on Friday at 7223 miles. Had to find a Sprinter dealer who happened to have one in stock $178. CDN
Not a big seller he said but had one in stock!!!!
I now have the newer version of this hose, and hope that it will last a bit more time

There was oil inside the hose, but I am not sure if it got suck in or what cause that part of the engine to get all oily
Going to dealer today for oil change and I will get them to have a look at this

More later

The tech at the dealership told me that the problem with the intercooler hose is oil going on it and damaging the rubber to the point of breaking after a while
How right is he, I do not know but I am wandering if I should carry a spare one in my View

claudalfa,
As it is typical for some entrained oil to come out of a turbo I would think the hose would be designed to deal with it. From everything I've learned a bit of oil coming out of the turbo and getting into the air intake system is normal. I don't know how much is too much, but I suspect it would become obvious.

Is the mechanic you spoke to an experienced Sprinter technician? Maybe he is drawing on some history, but it seems unlikely to me. Unless you find a history of that part failing $178.00 seems a bit steep for an on board spare for my taste (my taste is cheap though). AP

Some oil small amount is normal. I use to worry about it too. Your Sprinter has to work hard for that View but haven't heard of that hose blowing to often.

Dealer did oil change today and the Sprinter tech specialist thinks that all this hose problem is in fact a bad crimping from the factory on that hose, because they never had any come back with the new type hose
They also did the H44 module upgrade
A quart of Mobil one SP1 oil is selling here for $14.56 each and that is a lot of money for this product
Total for oil change, 2 extra quarts of oil, parking light bulb and door and hood hinges grease job $354.35

Just bought that hose (94.00 US) during my weekly trek from Maryland to New Jersey. Lost some power (noticeable going uphill) and saw the crack in the hose. Temp fix in place (all purpose duct tape) till I can get back to the homestead.

Just had both turbo hoses replaced under warranty yesterday. One was split 1/3 of the way around, the other was apparently showing early signs of failure (didn't see it first-hand).

24K miles on 2007 144.

Went in for low power symptoms, check engine light, turbo on and off, etc. Initially the dealer just did a manual regen of the DPF, saying that's what the codes indicated was wrong. They were ready to send me on my way. Once I pointed out the oily and torn hose, they decided it was a good idea to replace them both!

The one that I saw was split at the very top, right where it fits over a metal flange (not sure what end that is connecting to). John at Upscale helped me diagnose this and showed me where to look for the split.

From the sound of things, this is apparently a bit of a chronic issue with the NCV3, analogous to (but maybe not as common as) the T1N 'turbo resonator' issue. In the case of the NCV3, the hose apparently fails by being abraded or cut by a sharp edge on the metal flange, rather than failure under pressure like the resonators...

Interestingly, my van seems WAY quieter in terms of turbo whine now that it has been fixed. Not sure if the hose was leaking for some time, allowing for more noise to escape, without total failure? I actually miss the turbo noise, I liked hearing the turbo wind up and down...

We have great news for late model Sprinter owners that will be experiencing turbo air charge hose failures. As authorized dealers for Riordanco, the same folks who brought you the Sprinter Turbo Resonator Eliminator(TM), we are happy to announce a new product, the Turbo Hose Adapter(TM). As you know, the turbo air charge hose splits at the factory metal connecter. It is apparent this is a chronic problem since once again Dodge asked The James Riordan Company to create a fix. The repair is a new direct fit adapter connecter that replaces the factory metal connecter where the hose splits. You remove the factory connecter retaining clip and lower the hose (taking the hose completely off the vehicle is the easiest way to do the repair), cut the hose where the split occurs and remove the factory metal connecter, transfer the factory o-ring from the factory connecter on to the Turbo Hose Adapter(TM), install the Turbo Hose Adapter(TM) into the air charge pipe and install the factory retaining clip into the adapter, make sure there is no debris in the air charge hose and clamp the hose on the Turbo Hose Adapter(TM) with the supplied hose clamp. Very simple!! The adapter’s design features a rounded edge that will prevent hose chaffing and failure. I can guarantee you this; it’s not if your air charge hose will fail, it’s when will it fail!! The Turbo Hose Adapter(TM) is now available for immediate delivery for only $79.95 each plus shipping which is about half the cost of replacing the hose. The adapter fits both the passenger and the driver’s side hoses with the driver’s side failure being the most common. We hope this info and product helps.

I bought my Sprinter at 72000 mi. Replaced the intercooler hose at 87000 in 2010 and then now again at 105000 2013. There was oil on the outside.

Does no one make full silicone replacement hose with new coupler?
:idunno:

I recall posts/threads where owners have put together DIY hoses using different materials of construction. The Riordanco hose adapter should provide you one end. Summit Racing is likely a source for silicone hose.

The above said, you may have a solution looking for a problem. Notice that the majority of the posts are from 2009. There was probably a quality control issue for the hoses which has since been ironed out. I know that there was a redesign on one or more V6 turbo hoses. (Made slightly longer as I recall.)
