According to MB specs, it was considered OEM for the 02-03 Sprinters in the US. It -fits- all T1N Sprinters, but wasn't considered OEM (from the factory) for the 04-06 Sprinters.

MB indicates that the OEM engine air filter with the extra layer is needed for the ASSYST filter condition monitor to function properly.

A fleece type engine oil filter is not appropriate for our diesel engines.

I have one of those in the garage. I think I miss ordered last fall when I got all my maintenance stuff, and somehow ended up with 2 engine air filters. The one without the foam went i to the van , and I filed the other, planning to look into it. Is there a problem using the foam backed filter in a 2005 T1N without ASSYST?

This is an option.
Don't think for a minute that the Sprinter is the only application.
The GMC 3500 PU with 6,5 diesel 1994 to 1998 had the same option for their air filter.
It was to be used in extreme dusty conditions.
In most applications it got neglected and caused loss of power and black smoke emission.
The same applies to the Sprinter.
