2002 freightliner with 232k
Previous owner gave it 15w40 delo it's entire life
I've called several Mercedes specialist and they literally all recommended something different

I want my sprinter to last at least 500k
I've been sitting at advance auto parts for their last hour trying to figure it out. What oil and what filter is the absolute best for my sprinter? I live in Texas

Thank you all

What about oil filters? Mobil 1 is okay to use? That's all my local parts store has
Should be fine. Replace the o rings, and make sure the filter is a firm fit on the filter housing.

There is a thread on oil filters.that you should read when you have the time.

If memory serves, there are three O-rings on the filter's stalk.
They're all important.

p.s. in other oil threads, there are reports of some WalMarts having Mobil 1 ESP for a bit over $5.25 a quart (in 5-quart bottles).

Priced now at $22.88 (5qt) bottle = $4.58 + tax / quart. Should be spec'd for T1N's. I should buy some. :hmmm:

Amazon currently has them for the same price...

Funny you say that I'm at Walmart right now. All they have is Mobil 1 0w40. No 5w40. This oil change has taken all day and I haven't even started. I'm just going to get the 0w40.im getting the Mobil 1 oil filter too.

Now for the AIR filter. Oh jeez. They're 63 dollars at dodge and 53 at Mercedes Benz. I got one at linden engineering in Colorado for 23 dollars a few months ago and it was oem. I just got off the phone with linden and they say that's what the local dealer charges. Does anyone know why they're so much more expensive here in Texas?

Is esp better than the European formula?

Get the cheapest spec'd oil. I have been using Mobil 0W-40 almost forever for the sprinter.

EDIT: My MAHLE/CLEVITE LX5131 air filter from RockAuto was $21.29 OTD. $15.16-$0.76 (5% discount code) + $6.89 (shipping). Or, go to Amazon and it's cheaper. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0068N05PI
You absolutely rock my friend.
For some reason if I don't change my air filter every 3 to 5 thousand miles I get heavy black smoke from my exhaust and lose power. I cannot in any way afford to keep buying them at 60 dollars each

Please verify that the filter I listed works for your 2002. I know when I looked it up, it wasn't listed for a 2002.

Oh boy! OIL!!

Most people who respond are mileage deficient.

Ciprian uses whatever 15w-40 MB 228.3 or MB 228.31 oil was cheapest. Last I heard he was over 770,000 miles original drive train.

I use diesel oil based upon many differemt MB and ACEA specs, brands, and price. Mostly synthetic, but I mix in dino oil. My 2004 has over 318,000 miles original drive train.

Using MB spec oil and lowest price works. Brands be damned, or all the MB and ACEA reseach means nothing.

22-23bux in 5qt jugs at WMT (or 49.32 tl, for 2jugs, incl a K&N filter)

Couple thoughts:

1. Ive never used the mobil one 5-40. Always used the 0-40. Any difference? I see 5w40 at stores where the 0w-40 used to be.

2. Id be wary of any non german, non oem/mb approved filter. I bought a bunch of hengst filters, $6 a pop online you cant go wrong! Others use the mahle filter which is think is maybe even better?

3. Either way i have gathered on here your oil may last longer than your filter! Some say the 12k interval is too long, some do every 5k or 7k. In the future i may keep my oil for the 12k which my ASSYST computer on my sprinter says, but change the filter halfway through. Waiting to do an oil test to see how my van is liking the standard 10-12k interval

I use delvac mobil 15-40, it work good. 100 000 miles.

Now I use a cheap synthetic oil and i feel more power in the engine. 5-40 febi bilstein oil.

I use filter mahle from germany or Dondaldson from USA, they work fine.

oil change every 5000 miles.

Is it listed as Euro Formula? Any MB spec on the label?

I thought that the only Sprinter MB approved Mobil 1 was 5w-40 ESP which was discontinued.

As an aside.
Personally I wouldn't use low ash ESP formula oil in a T1N. It is generally more expensive and isn't required for the OM612 or OM647 engines.

Depending on where you are located a 5W or 10W in a cooler climate and 10W or 15W in a warmer climate. Posting a link to an interesting blog on oil change for bluetec that I have followed religiously. I have 2 OM642 engines on s ML and sprinter. Steve's advice is honest and transparent.
