Black foam things

Hi , I have a 2006 118 and I was wondering if those black foam things behind the seats on the ceiling have a purpose ? if not are they hard to take out?

You would have to cut them out since half goes forward over the front doors. If you have an interior, there would be lots of foam pieces to protect heads.
Mine were cut back to fit a bulkhead. I took out the bulkhead and finished the job. Now I have rough, ugly things around the edge of the front headliner. Nobody notices.

Mine fall out occasionally, so no, they aren't hard to take out. They seem to serve no purpose at all IMO.
