Hi,

I'm looking at a 2002 Sprinter 4x4 with sprintshift for rebuilding to camper van which i test drove the other day.
Nice van , a bit more unstable compared to my VW T3 Syncro(vanagon) and T4(eurovan) Syncro

It has some rumble/vibration when driving away, is this normal?

Als when 4x4 enganged there s more noise coming from the driveline, is this normal?

BR,
Johannes

The vibration is caused by drive shaft angles not being correct. A common cause of misalignment is damage to the cross member that supports the gear box. If some one who does not read the instructions jacks the vehicle up under this cross member it is damaged. Easily fixed. Because it is apart time 4x4 the front diff is working harder when engaged. The sprint shift is a possible problem. They are very good but can fail suddenly without warning. What happens is the electric pump that provides the energy to change the gears can burn out. This can be manged by carrying a spare pump and the tools to change it. Welcome to the world of Sprinters. Eric.

Depending on how serious you intend to use 4 wheel drive be aware that you have no control of the clutch

Hi Eric and Norton,

Thanks for the reply!
That doesn't sound to serious and quite easy to fix.

The offroading will be light mainly gravel roads so that should be ok.

I will go for this van and can fetch in 2 weeks :) I will then post pics.

BR, Johannes

I've got an ex Scottish Power 4x4 Sprinter. I get a grumble now and then but nothing to worry about. I had a really bad whine from the rear axle and had to have it rebuilt. I took it to a dealer as I couldn't find a local indie specialist. Does the one you're looking at have a locking rear diff as well? I know my axle rebuild cost me £1600.
