View Full Version : Dumb Bilstein shock questions!

So I've spent some hours going thru here and the rest of the internet, replacing my shocks.

Sorted out the front...i actually liked the Sachs before they blew out...so have decided on the front replacement with the Bilstein 22-214768 in the OE B4 flavour. (158 long and tall)

Now the rear...i'm either getting the results for the 118' or the dually part numbers...and when I do find the 158 it says passenger van not cargo van...does anybody know the Bilstein part # for the OE equivalent? And why do they call them touring shocks?

I know the 4600 yellow shock part # but if I remember right, the last cargo van I put them on had a rough empty ride...

Changing sources of work so I plan on being empty a fair amount (or carrying a silly 10 lb box) with 2000 lbs at the upper limit...i was happy with the stockers up to 3000 when they worked...

Advice, anyone? Its a cargo van I spend a LOT of time in and I like not being too disturbed by Michigan type roads...thanks

Ok I might be on to a part number for cargo vans, but it doesnt state wheelbase

BILSTEIN HEAVY DUTY BNEA018BE
BILSTEIN SPORT BNEA018BE
BILSTEIN TOURING CLASS BNEA018BE

The ad I'm reading claims that its a heavy duty sport touring class shock lol

Was about to order BIL1911007 website said it was a B8 performance monotube shock for a single wheel sprinter. But $52? Double checked and its a dual rear wheel B4 OE shock..

If anyone is curious...Bilstein now has 28 different lines of shocks (carid.com has them nicely laid out) I'm beginning to understand why this was so confusing

Brokecanadian
03-21-2017, 06:16 AM
So carid.com has a great price of $90 for the proper Bilstein front strut and $34 for a dual rear wheel BECAUSE THEY FORGOT THE SINGLE WHEEL OPTION ARGGHHH

Edit: part numbers for all listed near the bottom...19-064529 winner winner chicken dinner

So unless somebody tells me otherwise, even though ebay doesn't say which wheelbase its for and tells me its a passenger van shock, and rear single wheel shocks are available from Bilstein in 3 different lengths, this is the correct part ?!?

Further down the rabbit hole. Ebay wouldn't order the shock (cart error) so I'm still looking. After wiping the grease off I find OEM # 904 320 26 30 and I get a hit cross referencing to Bilstein VNE-C340. Translates to a 3500 shock, which has been mentioned by several on ebay when ordering shocks on their 2500's so I'm looking again...KYB has a set for a good price in the 3500 shocks...here are some part #s ive come across for 158" super high sprinter fronts

AUTOMEGA 3041300292D0A (30413002920A)

Bilstein 22-214768
Sachs 115 904
KYB 335809
Meyle 026 623 0008
Mapco 40845
Monroe V4507 (4507)
TOPRAN 401 987 (401987)
TRW JGM1006T
Ultima D335809

No responsibility for errors from Ebay interchange info lol

Thanks for the Monroes tip...how many miles have you put on them? Similar to the stock? My Bilstein thing is just because they were the cure on my American vans but what I'm buying is just OE replacements...

As for calling and asking...nearly every website has errors on the shock applications, a simple cross reference list from Bilstein would have been helpful seeing as they sell shocks

I need to see from a few sources to believe it...like my van, why did it come stock with 3500 shocks its a 2500...i want the exact same ride it came with, so all the 2500 shocks would be wrong for me....

Checked out that last link (first one the website crashed) thats not a B6 shock and the part#s dont cover my 158 wheelbase...especially now that I know they're 3500 shocks with a whole different set of part#s

Thank you though...going to try shockwarehouse again..

Edit: that apparently IS a B6 shock (they dont call them 4600 anymore) and it fits all sprinters for REAR...so a valid option...wonder if its a stiff ride empty?

I'm getting confused, been looking at fronts all day to fit the super high roof

So what is the difference between Bilstein:

22-214768
22-123404
VNE-C340

And where do I find out?

Ok from what I can gather they are all the same shock (B4 OE replacement series 22-214768 22-123404 VNE-C340) of different vintages. Here is the COMPLETE B4 listing

Confirmed VNE-C340 went to 22-123404 went to the latest 22-214768

So...ebay still won't let me order shocks...somehow I found this site

https://www.bilsteincanada.com/index.php

CANADIANS!!! I ordered the same Bilstein shocks as the cheapest seller on Ebay...and with HST it came to CHEAPER than US prices! Free shipping right now...another one I use

http://germanparts.ca

Good for consumables and certain parts like the Bosch coolant pump at 122 CDN...

From all your posts I think you already bought, but you asked about the Monroe's. I'm happy with them, but don't honestly know any other ride than slightly rough, as a sprinter is a commercial van. I'm happy, and the shocks that came off were either on their last leg or close too the last leg. I think they are smoother, but I know longer know how the previous ones rode. I have put just about 10,000 miles on them.

I ran with the recommendation of LindenEngineering, whom runs a shop out of Colorado, and contributes often on the forum, Like DR. A I respect his input.

If you search Monroe's you can find pic's and a thread on install. Derek

Yes I got the Bilsteins...the Monroes cost more here...the Sachs originals were the most non-trucky shocks I've ever experienced, that's the ride I was looking for...some weeks I'm in the van over 100 hours, every bump and jounce adds up
(The B4 OE replacements, dual tube, should be nice and comfy)

i use BILSTEIN HEAVY DUTY struts, i feel the van hard and it work fine. in other cars i have problems with SACHS struts. My first option is bilstein, the second option monroe.

if you do not will be loading with more than 1500 lb your van i think the BOGE struts will bring you a soft drive.

Boge are rare in Canada...hoping the Bilstein B4's will be a soft ride...seems like a few go for the Monroes

I do have a problem with one front Sachs, it wore out and filled with water and froze solid

Hi...fronts 22-214768 ONLY if you have the so called "super high roof"
Rears 19-064529 ....I ordered B4 for factory ride...do you need the B6s?

Forgot to mention I got a message today that there's none in stock so 7 to 10 days...oh well ebay would be too

So I thought I should close out the thread. Shocks came about a week later than if I ordered from the US by ebay, but were cheaper.

Ride is definitely trucky. I would say they nailed it for a stock ride, not as cushy as I hoped but I do haul freight for a living, so they're appropriate. I can HEAR bumps again instead of feeling them

I was admiring the seals on the shock before putting them on, I can tell these were built for long life

One further tidbit...many have replaced the T1N shocks without realignment and Dennis from Linden Engineering mentioned an alignment is part of a job well done. I doubted this

Lo and behold the steering is ever so slightly off. Time to break out the straightedge and strings (you were very correct Dennis, as always)
