It is a water-in-fuel sensor, and the sensor and valve in the center remove/install as a single piece.

First off you do know that is a used filter. That sensor is the water in fuel sensor. Not sure what you are asking on the last question.

Edit: I have an empty MB fuel filter box I will sell you.

Yes, that was a listing for a used filter. But good for a pic that's already on the web.

I planned on changing the filter today, but that sensor block looked like it had it's own hole in the filter, and my new replacement only had the center hole. So, I was wondering if I had the correct part from the parts store.

I hadn't noticed that the block part was a part of the the same part that goes into the center hole.

Anyway, I've replaced it and now I know just a little more about this drivetrain.

Thanks for the info and chat.

I only changed my fuel filter once in my 02 but I remember the sensor was taken off the old filter and moved to the new filter. Different year models this changes and not sure if yours is the same but it sounds like it is.
This may help you.

There is a write up section for T1N's that may help you in the future.
