I got my 2008 back after about 3 months with the dealer where they did god awful things to it. Now when i shut it down I hear what sounds to be a pumping noise that goes on for about 30 seconds. I dont remember it before this so maybe it was there before but now is a little noisier. What is it?

Most likely the egr cleaning itself???

That is supposed to happen, near front of engine if you have the hood open.

I was too lazy to look yet. I will this weekend. It's a new EGR valve....one of the three the dealer put in during the last three months.

That's the DEF pump purging the def lines. (keeps crystals from forming, and prevents DEF from freezing in the lines.)

I'm not trying to hijack your thread but my 2016 does that when the engine is cooling down, the only way I can describe it is that it sounds like a tiny little squeak for 5 seconds then it will cycle again in 30-60 seconds. It may be a pump, im not certain. Ive never heard it when the van is cold. Thoughts?

There's no DEF on a 2008. I'll look at it tomorrow if it's not raining again and see where it's coming from.

I agree with Rob S. I have a 2008 Sprinter with the little squeeking noise at shut down. I understand it is exercising the EGR to keep it moving. It is a good sound.

Yep! Mine does the same too.

To the OP: It is a new noise b/c I'm willing to bet your EGR is now actually working after the shop replaced the faulty one (hence no noise before). These vans make all kinds of post shut-down noises, most shouldn't be feared.

Yep..it's coming from the EGR...thanks. After all the "experimenting" the dealer did I hear all the new noises.
