A friend picked up a 2008 Sprinter with 50k miles.
Test drove it 20 miles ,paid for it and drove it 75 miles home.
That was Friday.Moved all his equipment in to Saturday and Sunday.
Left for work Monday morning and it quit in the first 20 miles.
New fuel pump needed .does bad fuel do this ?

Could be algae.
Caused by water in fuel; if left, ... it grows over time.

It looks very much like 'Diesel bug'!

Google it and you will see what I mean. It is very common in the boating fraternity where diesel stands in tanks for a long time.

You either need to clean it all thoroughly out or add a 'Diesel Bug Killer'.

HTH,
Keith.

Edit. Crossed posts with CJPJ but I think we're both talking about the same thing.

Had Algae in my boat filters, more like jelly than that. Although with 50, it wasn't used much could be the same schmuck. Clean it out and good to go. Maybe cut open the fuel filter to inspect to see what's in there too.

Might be water. The pics show what the fuel in my tank looked like (cloudy) before removing the tank and cleaning and what the "clean" side of the filter looked like after cutting it apart. The fuel/water looked like it had formed a sludge. This is all due to a fairly short (month of November, ‘14) time period following buying water contaminated fuel at a truck stop in NC. So, I doubt there was any microbial action for me.
