View Full Version : Built myself a bulkhead today.

Just bought an 06 low top shorty and needed to get a bulkhead. Looked around and couldn't find anything so I made one myself. Used 3/4 ply (3 pieces, since I will make the center piece a slider at some point) and covered it with gray indoor-outdoor carpet from Home Depot.

Pretty happy with it. I was worried the inside of the cargo area would seem small once it was installed but it doesn't seem any smaller. Much quieter inside the cab now. A lot quieter than the metal bulkhead I had in my 140" SHC. Plus, now prying eyes can't see what's in the back.

Good idea. Bet it helps with the heat and AC as well.

I think the USA is one of the only countries in the world where you can have a van without a bulkhead to the rear storage area. Most other countries have made this illegal for safety reasons. We Muricans like the freedom to be killed by whatever is in the back when we stop short :professor:

very good.
dont take this from the wrong side, but crazyswede's opinion reminded me of a George Carlin routine i always laugh at.

Thanks guys. I'm sure it will help with cooling. My main reason was for noise, security and now I have a wall to hang things on..

Can you post some more photos? Also can you give a description of how you built it and what materials you used? Does is have a sliding door.

Thanks Randy

Let me take some measurements tomorrow. I forget the exact measurements but I believe the two ends were (3/4" plywood) 26 1/2". One 2x3 that I fastened to the floor to attach the bottom of the plywood. I forgot to load cardboard so the side angles were trial and error. I stood it up straight next to the wall and just kept making cuts till it got close and then scribed it once I got it close.

I got the gray indoor/outdoor carpet from Home Depot. I think I got 15' and used the leftover for other things. Only about $35. I used carpet tape and wrapped the carpet around the plywood and stapled it top and bottom and on the edge. If I did it again I would probably glue the carpet to the plywood.

Never did make the door slide yet. I'm thinking some aluminum angle iron top and bottom as a track. For now it's just screwed together.

That's cool. I also have a shorty 118 and removed the factory metal bulkhead with window. I gave it away to another Sprinter owner. I like having fully reclining seats, and easy access to the cargo area. Also I found my van less noisy without it. The AC and heater don't seem to have any trouble cooling or heating my whole van.

Like you, I used I/O carpet on the panels I'm fitting to the insides of my van's cargo area. It looks bluer in my van than it did in the store (I think the fluorescent lamps in the store really screw up color perception). I had really good luck using 3M Spray Glue #90, just follow the directions on the can.
