Montana Camping?

We are on a hard run but will be stopping in Montana tonight, somewhere between Billings and Missoula. I have seen so many wonderful pictures of perfect camping spots on this forum but our luck at campgrounds has not been so great. We are looking for any suggestions of a good spot (that is dog friendly) not to far off the beaten path, as we don't have much time.

I NEED to see the stars even If it is just for one night...

Look up the Montana Public fishing access areas. Many have simple facilities and are cheap, although the week end might be busy. There are many such areas along the Yellowstone, the three forks and the Clark fork.
