Adding DEF

After 6000 miles with 2014 4 cyl. I had to add 4 gallons DEF (from pump at truck stop)... so 1500 miles per gallon is about right? Cheaper than diesel so no problem there.

Great mileage....

You could probably stretch the miles IF you never idle unnecessarily; drive no more than 65mph; use your shifting from 7>6>5>4....; get a ScanGauge II, etc.

cheers...

I think the # is on the fill cap. So far all the DEF fluid I looked at has that approved #.

Twinjayhawks,
The DEF Fluid meets the following Specs:
ISO 22241-1:2005
and
DIN 70070:2005
Here's the MSDS:
http://www.terracairdef.com/MSDS_Technical

I just put 2.5 gallons in my 2014.

I paid $13.99 @ Casey's General Store.
This place has it for $7.99 for the 2.5 gal kit.
http://www.ruralking.com/terracair-diesel-exhaust-fluid-2-5-gallons.html
This is a great kit....no spill, easier to handle than the 2.5 gallon Peak Blue DEF in a box.
Comes with a nice spout.
There's a spout on each DEF Kit..... the trick is to find it.
Hint...it's UNDER the label on the back of the container.
Hope this helps,
Roger

I think it was 3 bucks a gallon at the truck stop pump... hope it was the right stuff

No, there's no fill line; fill to the brim but do generously wash with water the DEF overflow that trickled down the pipe and onto the cars parts. It's corrosive.

cheers...

Karl2014,
There's no "fill line" for the tube leading to the DEF tank.
Probably not a good idea to overfill it as DEF is very corrosive and any spills need to be thoroughly flushed with
water right away if on painted metal.
$3.00/gal for 2.5 gal. = $7.50 so the product from TerraCair in the 2.5 gallon jug (with nice spout) from ruralking.com is
pretty reasonably priced.
From Casey's General Store....for $13.99....not such a good deal, but much better than some are paying at the dealers.
Since the DEF fluid has a shelf life, probably best to buy some when the DEF warning first comes on and put in just 2.5 gallons.
That has been pretty easy to do....Walmart has the PEAK Blue DEF in 2.5 gal. containers (in a cardboard carton) for ~$13.00.
Sounds like buying it at the pump in a well equipped truck stop may get the best price.
As far as "was it the right stuff" any business that's selling fuel and fluids to the trucking industry would be in big trouble if their
DEF fluid did not meet the ISO 22241-1 specification.
Trucking companies have good lawyers and sub standard fuels or fluids that damage expensive diesel trucks is simply not tolerated.
Hope this helps,
Roger

is there a difference between mb's add blue and the generic def? besides price? I cant find the add blue for less than 14$ per gallon
Pee is pee as long as it is approved. All that I have found has the MB approval #. In case you didn't know def fluid is purified water and urea or pee. One bottle I bought said high quality animal urea. Amazon link below says automotive grade urea.

Actually it's synthetic urea (made in a laboratory) not any sort of urine.
Here's some info from the Brenntag UltraPure Diesel Exhaust Fluid site:
What is Urea
DEF Quick FAQ's

Q: What is urea?
A: Urea is the active ingredient of Diesel Exhaust Fluid. Urea is created from synthetic ammonia and carbon dioxide when subjected to high heat and pressure and can be produced as a liquid or solid. Synthetic urea is used mainly in fertilizers but is used in plastics, animal feed, cleaning agents, and pharmaceutical applications.
Hope this helps,
Roger

I guess I need to pour out those 50 gal. drums of pee I've been saving/hording for my next new model...

A recent post I felt worth repeating. It gives some practical information for DEF storage.

Thanks goes to Peter.

You don't have to store 2.5g. Keep the spout - you can buy it in 1 gallon containers, and the threads fit the spout. Then if you're caught out somewhere, you've got a bit to keep you going past the 20th start.

I found this comment from a manufacturer's chemist on storage: "If stored at or below 68F it will store forever, above it starts to deteriorate and if it is in over 85-90 degree weather it will be useless in less than a year. Shelf life in a store with 70-75 degree temps is 2 years max." So you can carry a gallon or even 2.5 gal for a few months, but wouldn't want to carry it for most of a season. But it's not expensive - carry that extra gallon and if you don't need it you can always get rid of it. it's not heavily toxic or corrosive - it's a mixture of deionized water and synthetically made urea. Won't peel your paint off, etc.
vic

Added:

Another reason to not carry DEF. It is very corrosive to brass and copper electrical components. You really don't want a spill finding its way into your electrics.

:2cents: vic

Added: Others in the thread feel the spill proof containers are fine. Probably true as long as they are properly secured.
Edit:
Apparently experience is showing that it is best to keep the DEF system topped up. http://www.sprinter-source.com/forum/showthread.php?t=48399
