Is there a way to tell what year a sprinter is from your basic Craigslist photo? I am talking US market vans. I think early TiNs had the larger mirror bases and then they got the round stalk type, right? 2002(and all 118s) don't have rear fender trim, right? Any other clues?
Thanks!

The only changes I know were in 2000 so only affect the rest of the world, not US market.

MK1 sprinter had square headlights & seperate indicator lights
Mk2 sprinter 2000 -2003 had prismatic lenses on the headlights & integral indicators
MK2 sprinter 2003 -2006 had clear glass on headlights , indicator built in on outer edge

That is UK based vans & should still apply to US , hope it helps you

My 2002 2500 T1N has Fender Trim around the rear wheels.

I think that you could order it with or without. All 2002's are Freightliners. There are other minor trim differences between Dodge and Freightliners - The headlights are different, the grill is narrower on the Freightliner T1Ns (there is a metal part around the Freightlner headlights that is not the same as the Dodge) and I have some chorme strips on the outer edges of my front bumper. The Headlight/Trim differences between Dodge and Freightliner remained for all years of NAFTA T1N Sprinters.

Mechanically, the 2002 and 2003 Sprinters are the same (altho some early 2002's have intercooler in/out ports that are larger than the the rest of the production models - I have one of those).

The very early 2002's all had 15 inch rims (Mine, had 16's from the factory). Some models switched to 16 inch rims for some models (and continued to use that same size for the rest of the T1N NAFTA run). The 2002's with 16 inch rims are missing a spacer that was added in 2003, so you are limited to LT225/75 R16 tires, 2003 and later could have LT245/75 R16 tires (if your Sprinter came with 16 inch rims).

NAFTA Sprinters all have clear plastic headlight assemblies - none are made of glass.

Some Craigslist ads include a VIN, and the 7th digit from the left is the year for T1Ns

The mirrors are the first thing I look for. Also the windows on the '02-03 have black rubber gaskets around them, whereas the '04-'06 are glued in place and have no rubber gasket visible on the outside.
I also have a funny feeling that the plastic grill in the upper hood is different/smaller/missing or something.
The passenger interiors are also different. The earlier years have a wavy grey/blue pattern and the older years have a square pattern on them.

My early '02 (Dec '01 build date) 140" has no rear fender trim and 15" wheels. As you mentioned this was retained for the 118"s for all years. I had always assumed the fender trim add on was directly related to the switch to 16" wheels and the lift spacer- jmoller99's post suggests a couple of intermediate steps. Mine also does have narrower trim on the upper part of the hood than later models, which I think was another mid year '02 change since I rarely see it.
Of course, if there are any pics of the engine in the ad, the different intake manifolds are easily identifiable- search pics for OM-612 ('02-'03) and OM-647 ('04-'06) to see the difference.

ID a 2002 easily in a CL ad:
Fender side markers/ turn signals have
orange lenses vs. clear lenses 2003-2006.

Ha, I knew there had to be some details I overlooked, thanks men!
The 10th digit of the vin is good info, especially when looking at dirtbikes which may not have any paperwork. A huge percentage of the dirtbikes I see on craigslist are older than the seller represents them as being.
The window trim thing is a nice tidbit, I had never noticed that even when I had an 03 and 05 in my driveway at same time.
Nice catch on the side markers, that is another thing I will be looking at in the parking lots.
The visual engine differences are what got me thinking in the first place, a guy is selling an "03" but pic shows a 647 engine. I am guessing he didnt do much maintenance, lol.
Thanks!

My 2006 has the rubber gasket windows. Maybe it's a 118wb thing?

Huh. :hmmm:
The reason I say this about the windows is that when I ordered window tint for my '02, it came cut the wrong size. They didn't offer the the tint cut in the '02-03 , but only in the '04-'06. So I assumed that all '04-'06 years had slightly different windows or rubber gaskets than the earlier models.
My '02 had gaskets around the windows, whereas my '06 does not. Maybe it is a 118" thing.:idunno:

Changes of model years from 19995 through to 2006 were significant in both minor body style changes , interior and mechanical upgrades.
hood inserts three of seamless glass was standard in 2001 but not on side windows in Australia back to one piece rubber trim, Europe was totally seamless glass.
The difference in rubber seals versus seamless rubber was the curvature on the inner seam window inserts, hence the reasons for so many rust issues on the rubber inserts for windows, performed by buy inexperienced operators.

Two different rear window door profiles, one for the glass, the other is not glass adaptable.''In theory''.

Hey altered, is it common down there to have one rear door with a window, and one without?

OK wait... If you mean rear windows, then YES, those are glued in on my '06. My side windows have the rubber gaskets.
