View Full Version : How good are Sprinters in general?

I had a 2003, bought it with 200K miles with a broken transmission, had it fix for $4000, at 205K miles stopped running, 2 Dodge dealers and 2 diesel mechanics plus $4000 from my pocket made it run again, I converted this baby into a nice, very nice Camper, sold it for $13K, lost $8K.
I bought a 2008 new, converted to a camper again, very nice. After 3 yrs. I bought and extended warranty from Chrysler (thanks to god) at 31K miles an oil leak broke the supercharger, cost me $100 but the repair was over $5,000, two months later an oil leak at the differential plus a "click, click" sound due to a U joint, they changed the entire drive shaft, great now I thought it was perfect, no sir, the AC, blower and heat control wen bad, I am going to the dealer Putnam in Burlingame, Ca. next Monday, my extended warranty is $150 Mo. up to 70K miles.
Question: is this normal? I see Sprinters for sale with 300,000 miles at eBay, am I just a lemon collector?....I am looking next to the Dodge RAM-Pro Master, a version of the Fiat van, it is the most popular in Europe, front wheel drive, same power than the Sprinter and possibly 25MPG.
By the way I liked the 2003 better than the 2008, same interior space but 1.5 ft. shorted, lighter, easier to drive, 2/3 MPG better, same power, 1,000 pounds lighter, I might get a 2006 with low mileage and sell the 2008 but wife likes the 2008 better.....Cheers and comments.

I think you got a lemon, or have just had bad luck,

Personally, the idea of buying something built and sold with a collaboration between Fiat and Chrysler would curl my hair! (Especially in early marks, I would never be an early adopter)

So you'll learn to love the NCV3 too??

Your experience certainly sounds terrible. There are many Sprinters driving on the road worldwide without a long history of problems. There are also many owners who keep coming back to the Sprinter. Other than that I can't say how they are in general.

I have a 2003 which has 348 K onit. I've driven it over 130,000 myself. The Sprinter has paid for itself in fuel savings. I have had a couple of "would have been an accident if I was in my 96econoline" experiences, so for the aggravation of black death , fuel pump rebuilds , injector replacement and all , I love it. Totally worth it. If I could afford another I would probably have two.

You've had way more trouble than most.

Do a search for my yesterday update on the thread: "Mexico: Sprinters and a few others" for another observation on Sprinter quality/cost/reliability.
