N62 PTO Option

This $405 option says "PTO at front with bracket for additional alternator".

For a new Sprinter, I assume a second 220 amp alternator is added by a Mercedes dealer. But what I want to know is how it works. I read the description and it implies that it is engaged only at idle. So can I assume after engagement that normal driving is ok? Is there a switch on the dash to engage/disengage?

If it is not engaged, what is turning in the engine compartment? I assume there is not much of a load on the engine if not engaged.

I spoke with someone who claimed PTO is a general term and any alternator connection is a PTO. He also mumbled about a harmonic balancer. Can someone explain a PTO in simple terms to someone who only knows that the primary engine alternator has a belt pulley.

I want the on demand second alternator to provide a direct DC connection to a large house battery bank. The primary alternator will also feed power to the house battery bank via a Sure Power 1315. The second alternator is hopefully an on demand power source if engaged. If not engaged I hope it is not a drag on the engine.

I just heard from a Sprinter dealer. They claim the N62 option is simply a bracket for a second alternator. It is not a PTO.

Has anyone in the USA ordered this option? For $405 it better be more than a bracket.

I ordered N62 on a 2011 2500. It is more than just a bracket, but one still has buy more stuff. In addition to the N62, one has to get an alternator, regulator, serpentine belt and wiring. None of these items are available from MB or from the MB dealer. A MB Sprinter alternator will not fit. The bracket accepts a Bosch alternator that is usually used on a 2000 SAAB 9.3 2.0i 16V. I got one built for 250 amps. I got a Balmar MaxCharge regulator because it is programmable to maximize battery life. The serpentine belt is a six groove belt with the length chosen by trial and error. For wiring, I used 0000 gauge welding wire. Mine continues to work well after over 50K miles.

Here is the N62 --- Parts list

Qty MB# Description
1 A 906 501 20 82 hose, cooling fluid
1 A 000 993 08 02 stop spring (radiator)
1 A 906 501 33 82 hose, cooling fluid
1 A 642 203 05 40 bracket (to alternator)
1 N 910143 006001 screw MBN 10143-M6x16-8.8
1 A 642 200 11 70 belt tensioner
1 N 910143 008015 screw MBN 10143-M8x30-10.9
1 N 000912 008210 screw DIN 912-M8x65-10.9
1 A 001 993 46 96 main serpentine belt 21.36x2045
4 N 000000 003609 screw MBN 10143-M8x95-10.9
1 A 642 230 00 42 pulley, bracket
1 A 642 200 07 56 adapter cooling water intake
1 A 642 150 00 65 casting (alternator)
4 N 910143 008007 screw MBN 10143 M8x50 - 8.8

As you can see from this list, the N62 option changes the main serpentine belt for a longer one and also changes some of the hoses. So when one buys replacement or spare belts and hoses, one has to remember to get the right ones.

James,

Do you use your additional alternator at idle in conjunction with the high idle option? I have the adjustable high idle and still worry about idling long term even though i think that is what it is intended for. Just not much real user long term experience with these options and the dealers are in the dark..

Definitely what the high idle adjustment is built for - it's why I purchased the two options together.

You're right though - the dealers don't know anything about it... I am going to check on the alternator that has been mentioned and try to work out a belt. I'll this thread posted.

is worth a look.

if you go this way, it is important to get the Balmer regulator, and install both the battery and alternator temperature sense leads.

any second alternator will rotate with the engine.

the amount of load applied can be changed by modification of electric inputs to the alternator.

you can also search here for "second alternator" and gather additional info.
