It appears that not all Mobil 1 5w-40 ESP is created equal.

I did a search related to a Mobil1 5w-40 ESP oil price comment from another thread. I knew the local Pep Boys carried that oil so I keyed in on those local stores. The Mobil 1 5w-40 ESP full synthetic MB229.51 was listed at $12.79 a quart. No surprise to me for the price. I've noticed it being way too expensive before.

I then noticed that they carried Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5w-40 diesel in gallon jugs. The price was a surprising $27.99 each. A very good price for MB229.51 approved oil, too good maybe. A bit of searching showed that it is MB228.31 and MB235.27 approved, not MB229.51 for the NAFTA DPF engines. (As an aside, I believe the MB235.27 spec is related to retarder unit fluid.)

Anyway, just having ESP on the label isn't enough to make it good for the newer NCV3 V6 engines even with the 5w-40 viscosity. Apparently "synthetic" and "Delvac" together are important words to watch for on the Mobil 1 labels.

Sorry if I'm telling people what they already know.

This is why I stocked up on the non ESP Delvac1 before they discontinued it. Its for my T1N so the 228.5 approval is good for that. Its the gold standard of 228.5 and had an impeccable rep on BITOG before it got deleted.

I was sure the D1 ESP formula was 228.51 approved before though. Looking at the sheet now though, it seems there are no 5W40 oils on there. Maybe thats why?

Thanks. Now that you highlighted it, I remember skimming over that info and kinda ignoring it because it was in the Shell Rotella thread. That said, the Ursa comment caught my attention so I responded to that one. :idunno:

Maybe the information being repeated here in the NCV3 section has some value still. vic

I bought six cases when EPS 5/40 was on sale $4.99 a qt. I think it was NAPA that had to Special order it, too three weeks, but they sold it to me at the sale price. I don't think they wanted to, but the ad said Mobiil 1 ESP 5/50 $4.99 qt.
