Silicon and Paint

I need to do a temp fix for a leak in my roof...question....will the paint peel when I pull the silicon off?
If the paint is in good shape it shouldn't pull it off.

A disadvantage of silicone sealants is that they may leach out the silicone. That can cause future paint and sealants to not adhere well. Silicone residue is tough to remove 100%.

If the repair is truly temporary (less than one year or so?)why not just use latex caulk? It will seal and should come off fairly easily compared to silicone seals. DAP for one makes a latex caulk remover which comes in a tube.

Good luck. vic

Hi Happy,
The silicone may very well "soften" any paint you put it over.
Look for a "polysulphide" or rubber based sealer.
The other issue with a true "silicone RTV" product is that you will
never get any paint to truly stick to any surfaces it touches even after you
remove all of it.
It "migrates" into the metal substrate and there is no good way to
get it out/off the surface.
We tried it years ago on US Navy Radar systems and ended up spending
a whole lot of $$ to actually heat up the castings to "cook" the silicones
out so the casting could be repainted during overhaul (down to the bare
castings disassembly). We tried harsh toxic chemical strippers that "melt"
3-4 coat epoxy coating systems....converion coating/primer/topcoats
simply would not adhere until the casting was "cooked" at > 250 deg. F.
Bathtub caulk or better still one of the "wet application" roof sealer products
should do the trick for you with no "down the road" complications.

Roger, I hope you aren't talking about "roofing muck" in the paint cans. That stuff does not come off easily. Kersene based thinners work, but even those are a pain in the butt.
I personally would do the bathtub caulk for a short term fix. It's easy to remove... just ask my kids- the little ones think it's fun to "pull the string" in the bathtub. :shifty:

I needed it between A/C cover and roof on one side...leaking.
Need the repair only until dealer can get new seal...2 weeks and still waiting.
The Silicon I was going to use was GE Silicone II Window/Attic/Basement. But based on responses...maybe not a good idea

If it's that short a time?

Why not some quality duck tape?

Seriously, the quality types use natural rubber adheshive.

For short-term use, it usually removes cleanly with no residue.

If it does leave a bit behind? That can be removed with simple lighter fluid/kerosene/paint thinner-- if you leave them on too long.

It even comes in colors these days...
