Hi guys. We have such wonderful threads on our forum already about the fuel filter changes for our TN1's. If you own a 2001-2003 here is a version that is completely mess free. No fuel in the compartment.
In a nut shell: remove the three fuel hoses from the top of the filter in this order: Clear plastic fuel line (push white clamp to hose and pull using monofilament or string trimmer line), Return sensor line (left / passenger side) with torx head drive, and finally the fuel inlet with the hose clamp on the right. Be sure to keep the clear fuel line upward after disconnecting so fuel doesn't leak.
Now you have to completely remove the hex bolt on the filter housing clamp and spread open the filter housing clamp wide enough that the black plastic water drain bolt can pass upward unfettered leaving you easy access to the water sensor wire connector.
Then disconnect water sensor wire only (be careful to not remove the actual sensor unit) and lift the filter - still full of fuel - safely out of the engine compartment. Drain the old filter in a catch pan through the water drain nut or by removing the water sensor unit on the bottom. (yeah! no draining while in the compartment).
You can now put the plastic drain bolt and water sensor unit on your new filter.
Remove the bleed bolt on the top of your new filter and use a funnel with a clear vinyl hose to fill the filter with fuel through the the fuel inlet (that's the one bent at a right angle that comes from your fuel tank). It takes 8-10 fluid oz of diesel before fuel comes out of the bleed bolt hole (the only hex bolt on the top of your filter).
Now you're ready to replace bleed bolt. Back to the engine compartment and carefully position the fuel filled filter above its housing clamp. Now re connect the water sensor wire and slide the filter back down through it's filter housing clamp. Finally, reconnect the three fuel lines, starting with the return line with sensor (on the left), then the clear fuel line. Better be quick so you don't drip. Last, the fuel supply hose from your fuel tank. Remember it mat take a couple of cranks on the 2001-2003 models to draw fuel up to the engine. Make sure your battery is up to the challenge before starting the project.
Give this protocal a try .....It has worked great for me.
