I'm looking into putting a dash cam set up in my 170 van. What have you installed and how is it set up? Show some pics of it and what are the brand names of the unit. I thought of just getting a simple HD camcorder but I thought to check out what others have done.

I used to shoot movies for a living.

Cheaping out, I bought a Creative Vado HD. It's about the size and shape of a small cell phone and snaps on to the rear view mirror with elastic bands. Works well, and the camera position at the top of the windshield results in a great viewpoint.

Advantages:

Cheap. Less than $100.

It has a fairly wide angle lens, which is why I chose it. Far wider than most similar units.

Easy to mount. (elastic bands)

Stealthy. Unless you know what it is, you'd never suspect it's there.

Fairly good imagery, if a little contrasty. Small sized imager chip determines this.

Disadvantages:

It can't be independently powered in camera mode, so when the battery runs out, it's toast until you recharge it.

It times out and shuts off after about five minutes to save battery life and needs to be rebooted in order to record images. By this time, the thing you're trying to photograph may be gone.

It only holds one hour of HD video on the onboard memory. No external memory slot available.

If I were serious about good quality, reliable imagery I'd try one of these:

Check out some of the videos on the site to see what this little camera can do. Especially, view the "Base Jump" video. Amazing.

Here's some more info on the camera itself
