I especially like my aluminum u-channel supports that span between my benches for extremely strong support that does not block clear access to the space under our double bed.

I also use some fold down hardware from Rockler when I have only a single bed to support.

My separate dining table is free-standing and is sized to fit between the benches. The free-standing aspect is very useful since we use it outside the van more than inside. I tend to make swiss-army-knife fittings and this is no exception---it is covered in matching vinyl, snugs to the wall when folded and uses two TableMate2 adjustable folding tables for the legs. The TableMate2's can be used as individual tray tables instead if you want a laptop work table or such.

I've had good success with marine type tapered table legs and socket fittings. Typically on boats the table top is mounted on one center leg. Some longer tables use two, with one favoring each end. This method will not work well if you want to use the table outside or in multiple locations.

The links below will give you some idea of the style and whether you want to pursue it. I generally buy the parts at marine salvage stores to save on cost. Good luck. vic

I am having good luck with a simple home made folding leg. Each leg is made from six pieces of 12mm Appleply. The design is very simple to construct and works well in both the folded and upright position. In the upright position there is a gusset that holds the leg at 90 degrees and the legs sit on dowel pins in the floor. The top of the leg is drilled after assembly to make a pivot point for folding the leg.
