Engine Shutdown - ESP Problems

I was driving with my new 2009 model 3500 Dodge Sprinter through the Colorado mountains on i-70 and suddenly - without warning - the engine shut down and went into emergency mode. (See lights in photo).

Oil was ok - just had the first service about 150 miles earlier.

Sprinter is now at a Dodge dealership in Colorado. They mentioned something with a wrong voltage coming from the ESP system that blew off the exhaust system. They now replaced the ESP system but now some other system does not work.

Does anybody here heard about some problem like that before? I had to fly home and I'm just wondering how long that might take them to fix it. The van is under warranty but I can't do my work.

be aware of dealers changing parts for the sake of not knowing whats really wrong, while your bills mount.there have been members on here with that problem.
you could always get advice from doktor.a.

Chrysler dealers are starving for business... doesn't matter to them if they rip off the consumer or corporate(and MB too) for unnessesary work... last fall they pulled off $7k worth of this scam on my vehicle alone!!

the techie even took me aside and said "Don't be concerned about the stuff we put on the invoice, we have to do it, only way to get authorization...yadda yadda... spareme sparme"

Well, the question is - what options do we have? The Sprinter is new and under warranty. We can't bring it somewhere else other than the Dodge dealership. Back to the question - anybody hear about that problem yet?

I was traveling through the Colorado mountains and all of a sudden my dash board Lights up.
You will notice on your Vin you have a prep for telma retarder which assists to take the strain of braking through mountain climbs and steep decents.

Your option is... bring it to Mercedes, who will honour your existing standard warranty.

Is it official that Mercedes dealerships honor the existing standard warranty by Chrystler/Dodge? Is that written down somewhere?

How do they know when I purchased the vehicle new?

My local Dodge dealer is still doing warranty work on "Dodge" Sprinters

Peter: If you don't find the simple fix or the dealer is at a loss as to what to do etc etc.
Let me know I'll down-load an extensive pdf/ from Mercedes Global fix re ESP fault as it lies in the Yaw sensor in part.which requires quite a few rectification to resolve.

Here is an update: I have fully downloaded the Mercedes Global portal file .
Binary exc will crack this code in an hour or two.
Control unit fault code:ESP .
Complaint: ESP_indicator lamp and or ESP malfunction in instrument cluster after start The ESP lamp is off when engine is restarted.
Cause: 25 seconds after ignition is ON"..without an engine start the fuel pump in the tank shuts down ,this shutdown of the pump produces an interference pulse code fault: 4BD0 of which a turn rate {sensor-internal code) is scored.
Fault Code 4BD0/Fault text Yaw rate sensor-internal fault.

Richard, I inferred that the ESP fault light IS on after restart, which does not fit the description the MB fault

ptogel....

I have no idea where you are as you did not mention the Dodge dealer....But, if you are in Denver, call MB of Westminster, talk to Terry in service.....you have nothing to lose. It's a very good dealership, they might fix it!

So I talked to Terry at MB in Westminster, CO. While they might be reimbursed by Mercedes, there are some 13 states that do not allow the Dodge Sprinters to be fixed by Mercedes under warranty. Looks like they would help if I need help. But they get their parts even from Germany and it might take longer than when Dodge gets them from Detroit. He also knows the Dodge Dealership in Golden and he spoke highly about them. So I just hope I get a more positive call from Golden soon.

I also wonder what - if anything - Dodge will cover. While they fix up the van and pay for the repairs on the Sprinter - there is no word if they cover a rental van or the flights back home while they are trying to figure out what is wrong with it. Does anybody here have experience with what they cover for others?

This is why extended warranties are optional in name only.

It is odd that Mercedes is only offering an extended warranty on the Sprinter in about a dozen states.

Why does the face of that sheep look like the behind of a corpulent human?

No, I do not play soccer.

Ignore these off topic comments.

Dealer called back. Apparently, the exhaust system got so hot, that cables in the frame melted and made a short that killed the ESP computer. So they are repairing cables now... Don't ask me why. It was hot and it was in the Rock Mountains - but hot enough to melt cables in the frame?
