United Parcel Service Inc., the world's largest package-delivery company, has added 50 hybrid-electric delivery trucks in four cities, increasing fuel economy by an estimated 45 per cent over its conventional vehicles.

The diesel-electric trucks, produced by Navistar International Corp.'s Workhorse Custom Chassis unit and DaimlerChrysler AG's Freightliner division, with an Eaton Corp. power system, will operate in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and Phoenix, said UPS, which has 94,000 vehicles. The company saw first-quarter fuel costs rise 6.6 per cent from last year to $616 million (U.S.).
