Hi
A newbie here so please be gentle! I have an '04 plate 311 lwb Sprinter with 252,000 miles on the clock and always been serviced on the dot. However, just recently sometimes when I engage first gear and go to pull away she will jump out of 1st gear back into neautral with a hefty thump which can be quite frightful! Just wondered if anyone had similar problems in the past, what the problem is and what i could be expecting to pay to put problem right? Many thanks RDM |

Mine has done it a few times as well, but only when its cold. I just make sure its fully engaged before i pull off...its probably just another quirk of these vans...

Hi RDM , your gearbox problem is most likely a worn first/second gear syncro assy. or also possible but not as likely the actual gear for first has worn .
Another daft one i have encountered , is the gear change cables . If they are stiff to move , they may stop first engaging fully , try lubing the cables or replace if they feel stiff , dash mounted gear changes are prone to being difficult when cold due to crap cables Your first point is definately to check the cables & also the cheapest to sort @ about £80 a pair plus your time & effort Good luck with it :) |
