I have Dodge Sprinter Cago Van 3500 (158''wb) 9,999lbs and I am not required to have DOT number.

Does anyone know is it better to have or not have DOT number?

Well, I suppose the paint of the number increases the tare weight and reduces the net load capacity.

Unless something about your business requires one, I believe Sailquik Roger would recommend against it. Once you have a DOT number you're likely to then fall under more regulation which would probably include stopping for truck inspection. Roger had a great (costly) adventure with a box truck when he had to go in for inspection and they found he had some unopened beer buried in a cooler back in the box of an over 10,000# truck. Thank you
I think it's better for me to work with out DOT number ,but some brokers are requesting DOT# and I can't set up with them.
On Safer website they can't find me (with regular search) or other companies who only have MC# and don't have DOT# so they can't check company safety....
Under what DOT requlation could fall Dodge Sprinter 3500 ? (158''WB -9990 lbs)

Hi white011,
The DOT regs are quite specific that vehicles that are < 10,001 lbs.
are not required to have a USDOT Number. (GAVW here).
Sounds like you are hauling for profit, so you are in a very gray area.
If you talk to the USDOT folks, any vehicle that crosses state lines carrying ANYTHING as commerce or useable in commerce must have a USDOT Number regardless of weight.
BUT, what they don't tell you is that it's not just the USDOT NUMBER... you are now a trucking company!
You will HAVE be in compliance on:
Stop at weigh stations
Have a current USDOT physical exam/medical card.
Have a Federal USDOT vehicle inspection and sticker.
Fill out a log book for every hour you drive during the day.
Have your business records available for USDOT audit.
Oh, and as others have suggested, you cannot carry any alcoholic beverages
(any quantity ... any type unless it's manifested and you are a beverage distributor)
EVER! Not home from you local liquour store.... not home from your local grocery store.
Your vehicle gets impounded for at least one day... and the fine is $1,000.
So, you really want to think hard about getting a USDOT number for your Sprinter.
My advice, don't unless it's your business and you have another vehicle to drive at
other times.
